Rock stars ... is there anything they don't know?

What to do about spam ?
I am about to go out of my head with all the spam that I have been receiving. I was wondering what anyone else might be doing to combat it ? I know there are a lot of spam filtering products out there, but I am afraid of blocking confirmation messages or other messages from TGPs/sponsors, etc. I know I'm not the only one with this problem, so can anyone recommend a workable solution ? Any recommendations appreciated.

I use spam filters and still go through the spam before I click empty. I empty my spam every hour average 2500 msgs. Once or twice a day I'll get something that shouldn't be there.

The mail client that I use has Bayesian spam filter built in so I just hit add to junk mail and move on.
I get over a thousand a day, but only actually see less then thirty a day if that. Just use an e-mail client with a decent spam filter. |

I use filters too but I am sure that I have deleted one or two emails I shouldn't have. But, what else can you do? I don't want to use any of the online antispam products like spam arrest.

I'm the same as Jim - Eudora filters most of the mail into the "junk" folder & then I peruse it & pray I don't delete anything important.
Of course, once you tell it that the sender is not spamming, you're good to go |

Thanks for the quick responses. I use Outlook '02 and will check out its built-in filter. Looks kinda weak so far. I may have to give Eudora a look.
P.S. to GG and Jim - I sat in on your radio show for the first time this past tuesday. It ruled. See you all next tueday. |

Cleo, funny you should mention Mozilla, because I got my first look at their FireFox browser today (sorry to switch the thread to browsers). With features like Tabbed Browsing, integrated search, and pop-up blocking, I'll be installing it tonight. A co-worker showed it to me today, and it looked incredibly sweet!

FireFox while still not to version 1.0 yet is already a good browser.
Firefoz, Mozilla, Netscape and the others are all based on the same open source code base so it's all good, just download the flavor you like. You also don't have to worry about your home page getting highjacked and stuff like that. Well browser are kind of like an e-mail client so this thread has strayed too far… |

Being a former spammer I would say find a bayesian filter you can tweek. They are a little out of date but they are pretty effective at spotting spam. You are bound at some point to get a false positive but there is not much you can do about that. But deffinetly make a white list that will help with less false positives.
If you can train your filter to recognize the probabilitys of an emial being spam and keep a whitelist you should not have to big a problem, LOL unless your getting 2500 spams (that sucks). |

My account doesn't get tons of spam (yet), but my personal account gets oodles. Mozilla's filter kills most of it, though.

I posted a little review a while ago about this:
http://spambayes.sourceforge.net/ Works really well. Also, I turned off my catch-all. |

i just found this a few weeks ago. it took a few days to "learn" which e-mails i considered spam, but after about a week it has been 100% accurate. after my 30 day trial i'm definitetly buying this software. BTW. i guess i'm new here. i think i may have posted once a long time ago, but i don't remember. been reading the newsletter though, and lurking. |bat| ~josho |

No offence Apu, but when they were handing out religions you must have been out taking a whizz

I use MailWasher - it's free for single email addy usage and it has saved me at least an hour a day dealing with spam. It has a blacklist and a FriendsList and lets you review if you wish all the incoming mails. It is also plugged into SpamCop and ORDB databases. I don't completely love these "services" but when I get 300+ emails addressed to DrSmut every day trying to sell me viagra I had to do something. You can set it up so that once you blacklist/bounce an email addy or domain it will auto-bounce them forever so you don't even see the crapola.

Spamnet here -
I come home to normally 2-4K spam mails, and normally 8-10 emails I reply to.
