My free site (index.html) dilemas....

Good morning all. I am brand new here but have a question about free sites and the index page. I have begun building free sites to generate traffic for my movie site and what I have run into is that most link list's with any amount of signifigant traffic require me to link them on the index.html page. I see more and more not liking, say enter.html or warning.html Am I missing something by thinking I need to build a TON more sites cause I am limited on my front page options? Does anyone know what Im tryin to translate here?? Thanks guys and hope to be prosperous with you all in the future

I don't require an index page and last time I checked places like link-o-rama, Tommys, Richards didn't either.

I don't know, duplicate your whole site or use folders with your warning page in the folders.

I don't get this whole must be an index page thing. All I want is to see my recips on the page with some other places that will also be sending some traffic to the page.

Sites which require index.html are doing it coz they believe that multiple link backs from lots of index.html pages will improve their search engine rankings.

LOL...thats the funniest part - the LLs that cosistently send good traffic (and even good SE traffic) dont have requirements like that

If they require an index page listing, make sure you require them to send productive and plentiful traffic (disclaimer - there are 2 or 3 that I can think of that are worth the effort to make sure they are on the index page) The rest understand that the traffic trade is more important than the SE effect a PR1 or 2 site has on their own lists....they ought to spend the effort on building other sources of productive traffic on their LLs than worry about what page a recip is on...and get some good quality authoratative links for building their own SE rankings instead of spamming log stats and guestbooks.

Unfortunately the index74.html's are mostly autosubmits so they dont make it very far anyway

Urb...gotta agree...it just doesn't mean anything ..I have loads of free sites with #1 listings and PR3,4's that are the warning or enter variety

Of course after a few years of submitting and tracking you can pretty much figure your submits down to maybe one or two entrances anyway (dependant on niche) with 9 or so recips each...not much need for more than that

Ugh..you hit on one of my pet peeves. I hope you don't mind, but I'm going to copy a post I made on another forum here - the subject was 'Letter to self important LL owners'

Dear Sir/Madam,

I don't know what your thinking, I really don't. I thought that we were in a sorta partnership. I would read your rules, better yet, I would FOLLOW them. I am an honest webmaster, so I would produce at least 5 high quality free or AVS sites a week and submit them to you to fill out your link list.

In return, you would link those websites, and send me some traffic, and perhaps we could even increase our link popularity by linking back and forth.

It seemed like a really good, fair partnership.

Now, you have changed the rules.

First you were demanding that I make sure and link specific other link lists on the same page as I linked you. I thought you were being silly because the tiny % of the other link lists traffic you would actually get didn't seem worth it, but what the heck, I liked you, so I did it.

Then you said 'I don't want to be on any ole doorway pages, I demand to be on an index.html page' and I thought, gee you sure are getting bossy, and our partnership doesn't seem quite so fair now when I have to link you from the index page of my site, and you just give me a little tiny text link buried way far away somewhere in your link list. But that's okay, I will just make several mirror sites in directories and give you an index.html page link from one of them

Then you said 'No doorways, I want to be on THEE main index.html page' and I started liking you less - you seemed to have forgotten that your not just providing me with a service, I'm helping you out too by submitting sites to your ll that help you ensure a large variety of styles, niches, pictures, and the like, to make your surfers happy. But I thought, fine, I will do you this favor because I know that google PR is important - but really, how many link lists can I link to from one page?

Now, now you have gone to far though. Now, in addition to all your rules you want me to link to both your main page AND to the category page that I am submitting to! Sure, I do that for greenguy, and maybe penis bot, but you send me maybe 5 hits a week - what are you thinking?

I begin to think you have become to full of yourself, you want to be just like 'the big guys' so you are imitating them. But your not one of the big guys, your just a little fish like me. I don't care if you spent $150 to buy a link list script, and your site looks really pretty, it's not worth it to me to follow all your rules, which seem to multiply by the week, for your 5 hits a week - it's just not. It is not my job to both populate your link list AND increase your page ranking - it's yours.

I sure hope you come to your senses, or start sending alot more traffic out before everyone who submits to you comes to the same conclusion that I have, and suddenly you are stuck with a link list that has no sites being submitted to it. Food for thought.

fortunately I dont lose faith when I see some newer people taking the time to build the hard way and they will reap the benefits in the long run....the others are looking for instant gratification and it might happen for a few months, but then it'll go away just like it always has

The PR of a site at the time of submission means nothing. I submit new sites (no recips on doorways, just a few selected LLs per site) which have no PR, and get listed for 6 months (on average). In exchange most of my sites appear as PR3/4 backlinks at the LLs forever. PR wise that's ridiculous.

Personally I think it's funny. Looking at my stats for just one domain and knowing the #1 Google listings for that domain. Here's the doorway and the Google hits for yesterday.

Sebastian...I totally agree...hope ya understood I was being sarcastic - PR should have nothing whatsoever to do with submitting free sites (or for that matter tgp galleries or AVS sites) - its totally ridiculous to expect or plan for something that isnt even known to count for beans anymore (using a tool that cant count beans) when setting up a traffic site like a LL or Directory.
If people would spend the time on the 99 other things that make a site do well in search engines and not focus on that one little thingie called PR, they might end up doing alot better than they thought and they might actually start making a good living and have some fun in this biz
