Outgoing Links... just how important they can be!?

Around three months ago, I started a new site.. http://www.sexinmedia.com/ I updated it for a month, submitted it to dmoz and forgot all about it.
Then three days ago I checked it out... PR5!
Can't be because of the incoming links... but I'd love to hear your feedback on why the PR of this site is so high.

Can't say, I have a brand new domain that started off with a PR 3 and I have no clue why either.

It's hard to say, now that google only shows random backlinks. You might check yahoo backlinks, that could at least put you on the track of some possibilities.

My guess is that it's something that occasionally happens with PR when dmoz is involved. Sometimes google somehow decides that a domain is linked from a high pr cat, usually mainstream, and so you get a short period of falso pr.

You know, I don't know if dropping the url into a PR checker might give you it's more realistic pr...

But, if you think it's an error, it probably is.

In the tool I use it shows PR5 as well. I wouldn't be worried if I had PR5 domain without any hard work done on it.
I'd rather be worried if I had low PR and spend months trying to get it higher.

PRs look like a subjective characteristics of a domain to me. Does the site have high SE positions on the keywords you target? If it doesn't, PR5 is nothing but shit.

PR5 doesn't mean much as far as SE goes for me either. I have 4 PR3 domains that rake in 10 times the SE traffic I get for this domain! The only reason I'm peeved is that my other domains don't have PR5 and they have better quality backlinks coming into them lol!
I am 90% certain that the PR of this domain is more from the outgoing links - mostly to major newspapers around the world, than anything else. I have another site listed in same category at DMOZ - Adult/News/ which has a PR4 despite over 8k in backlinks.
Yahoo says 2,200 backlinks for sexinmedia.com - but most of them come from my own lower PR sites.
Lets see if the PR holds in a couple of months. I'm not really promoting this domain for now.

Well, outgoing links are important content, and the general agreement is that they add to "relevancy" and improve SERP ranking.

But I have never heard anyone suggest that they pass on PR. Nor do I believe it's possible.

I think you either have a link from a high pr page that you haven't yet discovered, or that this is a rare but well known error that google sometimes makes with dmoz listings.

There are a few interesting points I would like to make out.

1. Yahoo / MSN will pick up anything and everything they are non-biased search engines
2. Google is speeding and doing full updates for the public to see every 6 or so months now? As far as Imp concerned after 7 years of dedication to Google I am just about through. The other search engines are becoming easier and easier to gain top ranking and offer much more traffic.

However if still interested in Google Here is what Ive found regarding their ranking structure. They work off of a point structure. Points are gained by a calculation of several on-page factors. In other words a high PR link to your site will not be equal in any means as a high PR link in a non-adult site

Calculations:

Quality of site / Content / keyword density
Relevant links
How many outbound links are on per page? (I know this is debatable however one thing has been proven over and over again - a page with 5 linked keywords are given higher points per link as appose to a page with 100 linked keywords)
How many outbound links on your partner’s links
A high 6 PR site linking to you with 100 other links vs. a 3PR site with 5 other links will count as more points – always.

Another thing to consider – you have an adult site with all links pointing back to your index for the most part. Many adult sites out there keep building index page after index page in order to keep the link exchange partners happy. However thinking back on it – this does NO good for your search engine rankings as these pages people are linking to have no links to other pages of your site. Well Imp sure you know what I mean.

Anyways congrads on the 5PR – Those are always nice surprises

Peace!

Having your site in DMOZ the grandfather of search engines also helps out big time!!!! Especially since Google spidered it and decided it was worthy to add to their personal Directory as well

MAJOR KOOTOES ON THAT!

Bill - you are correct that the outgoing links do not actually add to your PR - unless of course the page you are linking to links back - then you get a .9 or so return based on a combination of a bunch of other factors that no one can decide on

However - starting about 3 years ago Google started adding some sort of "extra credit" to sites that were already what they considered to be "authority sites" if they were also linking out to other "authority sites". Its pretty difficult to get that status however once you do, you can do just about anything you want.
It doesnt show up as an increase in "displayed PR" but it definitely shows in the SERP rankings and can allow you to do magic with listing new pages
