correlation: favicon.ico and 404 page

I've noticed from my (analog 5.30) stats that the number of "Redirection requests" for favicon.ico almost equals the "Requests" for my 404 page.
For example, this month the favicon.ico total is 33561 and the 404 page is 33762.

Does that sound feasible, or could there be another reason for my 404 page being requested so frequently?

TIA

If you do not have favicon and someone tries to bookmark your site it will generate a 404 error from what I understand.

That's what I thought.

But 33000 bookmarkers this month seems unlikely (unfortunately)

I think just someone going to a page without a favicon will show that error..not just bookmarkers.

Yup, like Jim said....I get a favicon.ico request for almost every surfer it seems....regardless of bookmarking.

Starting with IE 5.0, IE tries to download one no matter what.. so it's not an accurate bookmarker count like it was in earlier days.
I created favicons for a few sites cuz I was sick of seeing the log entry so much, lol

I have the same problem. I had the same problem. Thanks guys.

I didn't know what it was but then I thought "Let's use Google to search for favicon.ico :-)". And here is the result:

Heres a link to a favicon maker that works great. You make a nice square image in photoshop or whatever, then use this page and it makes it into a very nice favicon for you.
http://www.html-kit.com/e/favicon.cgi
I've been using html-kit for years as my html/perl/php/javascript editor too. Good stuff.

Is this link working for you? All I get is "cannot find server".

I used to use a piece of shit trial version of some favicon software, but since it always crashed (even blue screens!) I never bothered to buy it, and now it's expired.

Yeah... site seems to be down now for me too. A quick search and I found another similar tool though:

This one is free and works nice for creating icons too.
