I've had some mainstream sites on the back burner for quite sometime. I really, really want to devote time to it and get it fired up. I'm book marking this thread for future reference.

I've pretty much abandoned my adult sites to concentrate on mainstream. Right now, I have some links sites that I am trying to form into something like a mainstream tgp niche thingy.

giftfinder4u

and

BestOnlineCasinos4U

also have a ringtone (and more) site. Gotta get a links page up for that one:

HighLifeRingtones

Getting traffic is so much more challenging than with an adult site, but I'm hoping things get easier, the more work I do on the sites. Looking forward to seeing how Christmas affects the giftfinder site.

To me, that just reaks of thin profit margins and a shrinking market share.

before all you brown nosers jump down my throat, I highly respect tommy for the work he has done and the inovation he has shown. the proceeding comment is strictly objective.

There is so much traffic out there that it is better to share it. If i cant make the sale i'll pass the surfer to you so you can try, and vice versa.

I've only been building sites for 5 months now so i still have a lot to learn. Getting traffic in adult is almost too easy (not that i have made a big commitment to it yet)

pm's being sent to those that responded so far.
I completely agree - the adult industry is so much more helpful.
Some of what I have learnt in adult I have applied to mainstream - and as adult webmasters seem to be a bit more up on the share factor I have got some good advice from a few of those who do both mainstream and adult.

Personally I think its a good idea - anything to do with making money can be sold - everyone seems to want to know how to get rich. You just have to market it right and promote it well - and your a big player so you should be able to do that.

If you keep it continually updated, take a lot of advice from other webmasters and with your knowledge (which i assume you have a lot of as your quite successful) you could make the adult webmaster e-bible. Oh and don't forget all the hard work too

At any rate i would say it is worth a go.

Diversification is key

We do mainstream webdesign and content management, but with the amount of cms/portal software out these days it's not hard for anyone with db skills to be able to do a decent job setting up a self maintaining site.
I had a few ideas concerning marketing and selling (homemade)BBQ products (rubs, sauces, etc...) setting up the logistics and so forth, but I haven't persued it much.

I got a question for those of you doing mainstream as well.

I have a bunch of adult domains on the same ip. Would there be any issues putting a mainstream site on the same ip? Could someone do a whois serach or something and find all of the adult domains? I'd like to keep things separate.

Also, what are some good commission rates to look for with mainstream sites/products?

Hey ponyman,

Yes, someone could use whois.sc and get a list of all the sites on your ip.

As far as issues go, I guess it would depend on what kind of main stream site you were running and if it would be a problem if your target market knew about the adult sites.

Regards,
SF

I have been in mainstream for almost 3 years, travel sites - tours, hotel reservations, message board etc. Have been dabbling with adult on and off for the last 8 months or so but now am looking at expanding in that direction more seriously. Been doing some freesites and dare I say there may well be yet another newbies link list coming soon.

The difference between adult and mainstream in terms of how willing people are to share their strategies and secrets and the networking involved is absolutely staggering. There simply is no other equivalent to this board in the travel game.

In general having sites on IP mybe a bad idea - its possible that it can have a negatove effect on your SE renkings and may become more important in the future.

If you dont want ppl linking your adult site to your mainstream site then I would get them off that same IP - and possibly on different nameservers too if the nameserver it is currently on is mainly used for adult.

I'm also an adult wm who's looking to open some mainstream domains. I've been studying several mainstream niches/markets/keywords to target and I think I got around 2 who may be easier to penetrate.
What I don't like at mainstream affiliate companies is the fact that ALL I found until now pay by check and only once a month.
I'd love to see an affiliate company/network who's paying it's affiliates via epassporte, moneybookers or ikobo. Btw, if anyone knows of something like this, please share it here or PM.

I was in mainstream internet before coming to the adult side in 95. I still have too much work consulting on non-adult sites...

Anybody know a good shopping portal for traffic?

Currently trying to convince a client to let me suggest products for birthdays, anniversaries, etc. based on users personalized calendar DBs that track those things for them.

Also I generally try to pick up assorted products to go along with the adult sites. Like latex requires special maintenance, and there are also lotions and powders to be used when wearing it.

99% of all Our online income is from mainstream but still keeping in mind that "Sex sells".... sites that would fall into something like "Maxim" magazine..... personals do well.....selling Your own products does well........ We just slowly have gotten out of giving away others free porn, except those that have made us money since 98.......

I have a mainstream site http://www.houstonvehicles.com and www.muzicfreedom.com (Still developing) , sadly dealing with porn and the evil 2257 is sometimes easier than dealing with PR firms of gaming companies.
