There is a paid version called sphider-plus. Lots of features, bug fixes and major improvements. But overall it is stil a search engine script. You need lots of server power to run it properly and traffic to make some money on it.

Ppc ratio is way lower than on any other my sites with similar amount of traffic thus my conclusion that site pointing to other external sites makes less money than a site with a real content. |

I've never run a proper search engine, but for a while I ran one fed by a feed from a PPC engine, so very little processing power needed. I made enough money selling adverts (down the side of the results) to make it worthwhile (ads shown in rotation, not search specific). I had to close it when the PPC engine folded and I could not find a similar one to replace it with.
I realise that I am comparing apples and oranges, and running a proper search engine is a lot more work than what I did. But the money I made from my engine indicates that if you have the processing power and traffic it could be very profitable indeed. If there were more hours in the day I would looking into this myself, but at the moment I'd have to give up sleeping if I took on any more work! |
