You mean in floor radiant heating? My father has it in his basement and loves it. Has never had a problem with it in 5 years.

Just be careful if you nail things into the floor once it's installed

I though the whole purpose was to keep the floor warm so her ass don't get cold while your nailing her on the floor

I don't think I've ever seen it in the states but I've seen it all over Europe. It's pretty cool actually but that's all I know.

Actually it's pretty common here - at least in the mountains in the higher-end homes. When (if) I finish the basement bath, I'll have the heating pads under the tile at the sink, shower, and toilet - I hate cold feet.

It is definitely very cool. As I said my father has it in his basement. Allowed him to put tiles down and the floor never gets cold. Now this is in Canada of course so even in the cold winter his floor is warm on the feet.

It's common here as well - one of The Bitch's good friends was a secretary at a radiant floor heating company for many years.

I called a local ice rink contractor to see if they could install underfloor cooling. Why anyone would want to heat their floors is beyond me.

it seems sort of stupid to me

heat the floor and let the floor heat the air...

wouldnt it be better to heat the air directly ??

I think the theory is that a heated floor will radiate heat and the room will be kept warm rather evenly since heat rises. The flooring subsurface is much better at retaining heat than air is -- especially when the air isn't humidified. I can see where having a heated floor would be nice in the northern latitudes.

There is a building in China or Japan where the building's air temperature is maintained at 60F in the winter, and each office has individual ceramic heaters. They found it more efficient to heat a small area with a tiny heater than to heat an entire floor.

If you light a match and hold it in your room, the room doesn't warm up, but, if you hold it under your finger, you feel the heat rather quickly.

Another reason is so that your slate flooring isn't uncomfortably cold to the feet.

Very true...
I installed them for years and at least 5% of the time either the concrete, tile or wood flooring had to be ripped up. Most times with wood flooring you can make the repair from beneath.

cd is, of course, absolutely correct. When I was helping my brother-in-law build his home, we installed in-floor radiant heating in his basement and the two floors of the house. It's very efficient and super comfortable. The furnace itself is about the size of an average suitcase and hangs on a basement wall. But since he has the three floors separated by thermostatically controlled zones, there is an eight feet wide section of wall which is nothing but copper manifolds, zone valves and a colorful arrangement of tubing.

Other beautiful things about radiant heating is the lack of floor registers, baseboards and cold air returns which tend to dictate the positioning of furniture since they shouldn't be blocked.

What Greenie said is the biggest issue. You wouldn't want to frame up a new wall after installing the radiant tubing. My brother-in-law messed up and started using nails in his hardwood flooring gun which were going straight through the subfloor and endangering the tubes. Luckily, he discovered it before he hit anything and switched out the nails. Ooopsy.

About 90% of all new houses that are built in Sweden has floor radiant heating on the bottom floor.

Make sure it is waterheated floor (if you have waterradiators in the rest of the house) and not electrical, electrical cost a shitload to run (but cheaper to install).
Make sure to isolate at least 30 cm under otherwise you will loose 50%.

Our next door neighbor has under floor heating and it used to work really well until their house got flooded in a big storm. Now when he tries to use it he gets regular shorting that kicks the power off. I think his system is about 4 years old and maybe wasn't well insulated
