image hotlinker
I found this guy hotlinking images from one of my tgps.
I used .htaccess so he can show the thumbs but when you click on one you go to a avs site of mine. Can I do this to block him without getting in trouble with the legitmate tgp sites I've submitted to? Or what else can I do to block this asshole. I checked his tgp and he is hot linking other people's image too.  |

I clicked on the thumbs & got the full size images, so your htaccess isn't working
 Don't be fancy about it - put the htaccess in the root & don't allow any images to be accessed from other domains  |

What .htaccess are you using and where? Can you post the code so we can see what's going wrong?
<edited to add> First check that your host has the Apache Module mod_rewrite installed. If they have, there are a couple of ways of making this work properly, you may just have slightly the wrong syntax. Tech support should be able to give you all the info you need. The site in question is hosted in Germany by abovenet.de in case you are interested in contacting them about their client. European hosts are a little easier to deal with legally.

I removed the .htaccess because these images are on a tgp page.
Wouldn't using .htaccess block the tgp sites scripts that check to make sure the images are there and so on? I don't want to get into trouble with the tgp sites. Thanks for your help. |

I just copied and pasted that into an .htaccess file and it didn't seem to work.
How did you find out that his host is abovenet.de? I did a whois and got some other host company without any legit contact info...of course. |

Can the TGP's in question identify that you are using htaccess like this?

I don't know, I've did a search here on tgp and htaccess and it seems that I can use it.
I was under the impression that the scripts that tgp sites use wouldn't be able to read my images. I put the htaccess in place and am thinking about emailing the hosting company now that I know who they are. Thanks for all your help.  |

Your thumbs should not be loading since that domain should not be in you good domain list.

If you organize your domain, like I do, you can eliminate a lot of these problems and still allow limited hotlinking, such as for pic posts, tgps that require thumbs, etc.
I always have one folder for ALL my images, be they banners, content or whatever. In there I place one .htaccess file that disallows linking from anywhere BUT that particular domain. Problem solved. In my domains root I use another .htaccess to block site suckers and other undesirables. I have my own server, tho, so this may or may not be an acceptable solution for those on virtual hosting.

What I do is redirect hotlinkers and a few domains (like the DOMAIN-I-DONT-WANT). The latter domain is of course not a tgp domain . But galleries often get picked up by for instance non-english sites that sucks your bw without any change of return.Hotlinkers goes to a little popup-hell with a few popunders. That domains I don't want goes directly to a paysite (bad ratio, but I make money from them). But you must be sure that the paysite accepts this kind of redirect (I think not all does). I have been thinking a lot of that whether it was unethical or not. But my conclusion was that this is a legal form of self-defence Urb. I don't think that tgp scripts can read htaccess'es like this. But I have 2 tgp's whom script's say they find a 302 on my gallery (and there isn't). I immediately thought on my htaccess and toke it down. But they still found that 302. Cleo. I didn't thank you before. But I toke that 'Options -Indexes' from a post of you on this board in another thread. This is a real time savier. Much easier and safer then all these dummy index.html's. |
