Since a linklist and a blog directory are pretty much the same thing you could search the board and find a pretty good size list of tools that would do what you want. A couple I've looked at that seem pretty good are Skalinks and PHP Link Directory although don't be tempted by their RSS program Newstopica.

Think it also depends on if your talking about just listing blogs or listing feeds with updating.

Actually, that's a script I would love to find. One that worked much like your basic linklist directory but had the ability to add RSS feeds as well. Something that on the main page would parse out the most popular feed from each category and then when you went down into the various categories and sub-categories, it would display the top ten feeds of each category/sub-category along the way. And, of course, you could always "preview" a site before visiting.
I thought Newstopica was that script but in the end it didn't work and I couldn't get any support out of them to get it functioning the way I needed. Then again, I haven't went looking for that script in quite a while and I've got so many irons in the fire that even if it fell out of the sky, I couldn't even think of doing anything with it for 6 months. |

Thanks walrus!
That's a great idea, now i need some time Paul&John, many directories use 'hot links': http://www.mrcgiguy.com/hlsqldetails.shtml |

Forgot to mention a friend of mine uses WSN links and loves it. Pretty cheap also.

Hmmm now the question is do I get compensated by being able to use your script for giving up my idea?

Run into that type of thing a lot with free scripts but the template is pretty easy to edit (and you would definately want to so it has some style) so that it would work in opera.
And at least you know that going in...I once edited a template very heavily before I checked it for browser cross-compatibility and when I checked, it wasn't. Hours later, after combing through all the code I had just added and all the CSS...I found the problem in the basic template. Quote:

I'd love a directory script that did the following:
1) pulled RSS feeds for syndication on a 'whats new page' for all blogs listed 2) created individual pages for each blog listed including chunks from their RSS feeeds anything like that? |

I recently found a script, again thanks to walrus, that I am using to display RSS feeds on one of my page's. With it you can pick and choose what gets displayed, which parts or elements of the feed that is. Since each element is a variable, dont see why you could'nt use some or all of those same elements to build more pages. My only thoughts recently on the RSS thing, is it could possibly be seen as duplicate content. Also, the risk of other, less than ethical webmasters borrowing the content. ronnie |

As far as less than ethical webmasters ...I don't think you run any greater risk than you do simply by putting a site on the WWW. |

I'm digging the ideas being floated in this thread. I'm currently building my own blogging app and some of these ideas could be integrated or made into plugins for my package. I'm also building a link list/directory plugin for my app and also building some link tracking into it. If you would like to describe the perfect adult blog script could send me in some great directions in this project. Of course I am thinkin of running this project totally open source so if I do ever finish building then people here would be most welcome to use the app.

As far as a blogging script, I'd like one that handled links and exchanges much better, where you could not only enter an optional title tag but target as well. Tracking hits would be nice, especially if it rotated your links so that you could have a "top ten" as well as organized by hits in. I'd like to be able to set the blog up so that I could automaticly add a RSS feed at the bottom of a post from whomever sent me the most traffic but have it smart enough to a) only read the feed once and that being on the day of the post, b) only grab a definable # of characters from the feed with a "more from xyzblog" at the end, and c) it never posts the feed from the same source for a definable # of days. Oh ya, if it could go out and grab pics from my sponsors, write some text for itself and post all on its own.... Oh ya, and spell checking too...but of course I still wouldnt use it |
