yeah, same!

its funny how these contests drag all of us out of the woodwork....actually I do have an excuse for not being here, for those that did not know my house was struck by lightning and it fried out all my PCs and electrical goods, just a couple of days before heading on two weeks holiday to Panama, so now I am back and finally getting my replacement stuff! I am almost back to "normal" (its pretty much impossible to call me normal though )

cheers!
Luke

That sucks, I know what it's like...our house had gotten hit by lightning about four months ago and fried an x-box, home theater sytem and almost severaly fucked up a large screen TV along with all the other stuff hooked up to it. My PCs were unplugged an hour before, so It was damned lucky those weren't plugged in then...I would have cried had those been hit.

Get into the habit of unplugging everything before going to bed...you'll sleep alot sounder.

Thanks Boobster & warm wishes to you as well!

Chilihost, sorry to here about your lightening strike. That's definitely a drag! I have been thru that myself, now I have everything hooked up to APC ups's or Panamax power protectors. They won't help stop lightening, but the extra insurance they proide goes a long way towards the replacement of your equipment!

I had my old house struck by lightening during the summer while on vacation. I had 2 salt water fish tanks with complete reef setups. It blew out my power in 1/2 the house and destroyed my A/C unit. I came home to a fridge with everything rotted, 2 fish tanks (1 150 gallon and 1 90 gallon) completely destroyed. I lost about 10-15k worth of anemone's, fish etc and the insurance company wouldn't reimburse me.

It sucks.

Hi, Luke!
Sorry to hear, bloody nightmare that is... Can't even rely on a surge protector in that case. I was so wise to un-plug all my equipment last year when suddenly I had to go to Europe, and then came back and the high humidity had ruined my main computer - completely (motherboard, RAM, CPU, CD burner, video card,... only HDs survived)!
No power = no heat = best condition for moisture to destroy everything.
And despite good backups and undamaged hds it took ages to get everything back to 'usable' - 11 month later and some bits are still not installed or running properly (network being the worse - can't get it stable again).

to you and everybody else

Its storm season in Brisbane right now, they usually hit in the late arvo. My house is situated on top of a mountain ridge so I can actually see the storms coming. You should see me running around unplugging things when a storm is brewing!

jvastine, I did have it all hooked up to a power surge protector board (it was about $100, not just a cheapie) but the surge came through the satellite / phone lines. I did not realize until a few weeks ago that this could happen! It took out everything connected to satellite (phones, tv, computers and all things attached to them). Fortunately insurance has covered all but $200 deductable, its just taking forever to get everything fixed or replaced.

cheers!
Luke

I used to install DirecTv and most of the dead units we'd pull were knocked out by everyday surges coming through the phone line that DirecTv want you hooked up to 24/7.

I know its a nightmare, one good thing was that I bought a brand new laptop at the end of Sept and that forced me to do a proper backup to CD of everything...well, I thought it was everything, but I missed my email so now I completely lost 4 years of correspondence. And the disk was totally fried so there was no way of even attempting data recovery!

Oh well, live and learn, at least no one got hurt

cheers,
Luke
