Keeping the Search Engines Away

I am trying to send some code again using the newsletter. It always looks good when I test it but, has never worked :) If you can't see the code, check out the newsletter, HERE.

Like it or not, most of the major search engines are indexing your pages without you realizing it (at least those outside your firewalls). They use a "robot" (sometimes referred to as "spiders") to check out your pages, and then they index them in the ir databases.

Most of us want to be indexed, but there may be some things on your site that you do not want indexed. You can keep the spiders away with a file called robots.txt.

The robots.txt file must reside on your web server at the root. You can specify exactly what files and directories you would like protected. You can also specify what robots can or can not get to your files and index them. For example:

#no robots
User-agent: *
Disallow: /logs/

This robots.txt file (above) will keep ALL robots away from any URL beginning with logs (i.e. http://www.yoursite.com/logs/ would be protected as well as any other files under that). The * (wildcard) keeps all robots away. You can also specify certain robots:

#no webcrawler
User-agent: WebCrawler
Disallow: /logs/
Disallow: /private/

This robot above will keep away WebCrawler from logs as well as private. All other robots aside WebCrawler will get at and index these files. This can be useful in protecting certain areas of your site you may want to keep semi-private to the outside world.
