How To Change Your Host

Every so often, someone posts on our board that they are looking for a new host. Take it from someone that has been through at least a dozen hosts, it is never easy.

But, during this time of so much competition between hosting companies, you have it much easier than I ever did. When I opened my first site, I was on my isp's server. When I saw so much traffic going to my site, I called them and asked if I could possibly pay them more for the extra bandwidth I was surely using. They told me not to worry about it and I continued to conduct my business. Sure enough, after just one week, they removed my site from their server. My next move was to start calling mainstream hosting companies and asking if they accepted adult sites. It took me almost 30 calls before I found one that did. I set up my site and things seemed well. After a time, I noticed it was slowing down steadily. When I checked things out, I found almost a dozen large adult sites, including mine, on one server.

My first server that could handle the bandwidth was at Exodus. For a mere $50,000/month, I had all the bandwidth I could handle. :)

That was then and this is now. Bandwidth is cheap... Hosting is cheap but, you do get what you pay for. It is now a buyers market and you have some leverage. Before deciding on a new host, look around for comments, good or bad. Take your top 3 choices and ask them for their best price. Let them know that you are looking at other hosts and see what they can offer not only in bandwidth but more importantly, service. With bandwidth so cheap, the only thing a host can offer more than another host is their service. Believe me, there is nothing worse than to call and either get an answering machine or being told, we have no techs in the office right now.

The tip from all of this??? Be very careful which host you choose. Your business is only as strong as the weakest link in the chain. Many times, the weakest link is your host.
