Suggestions for a batch rename program?
I need a batch rename program that can order images by the time they was taken, (NOT the time they was downloaded) regardless of the camera, and then batch rename them in said order.
A friend recommended that I use ACDSee and that was a waste of time and money and the support staff was so worthless I just got a refund from them. We used a Nikon D70s and a Olympus Stylus 740 and both cameras are synchronized time wise, but in ACDSee they not only listed under the wrong times, they also listed the wrong dates, the times and dates shown in ACDSee wasn’t even close to the correct dates that the pics were taken, so I wrote ACDSee telling them of this issue, and all the options I tried to use to correct this issue and I got a copy/paste of their FAQ that I had already read and found worthless, (Proof that the support tech never read my email, cause if he did, he would have known the FAQ didn’t answer the question) I wrote at least 4 more emails and got zero response until today when I demanded a refund after 3+ weeks of trying to get help. What I have been doing is order the pics by time taken in “windows explorer” batch rename them there which would then list the first pic last, so I would then rename that pic and then use ACDSee to batch rename them the way I wanted them named, so I was doing more work then I needed to. Thanks. |

I use the Mac version of this for batch renaming files. It can sort by creation date which should work with your camera data. It also reads the EXIF info from your camera.
http://www.publicspace.net/windows/B...ame/index.html Aren't you a Photoshop user? C3 comes with Adobe Bridge and it puts ACDSee to shame IMO. |

Yeah I still use PSCS so I am just a tad bit outdated. It still works for me and I will keep using it for at least 6 more months or so and then I plan to make some changes in the things I use, so I want to wait before I spend $200 on an upgrade.
Thanks for the suggestion; I am looking it over now. |

"THE Rename" will sort files by file date, then rename in that sort order.
I guess you'd have to test it to see if it can sort by file creation time in finer increments than file date. I just popped in a memory card from a camera, sorted them by size, then dropped them in a copy of THE Rename. They resorted fine by file creation order, altho, oddly, the program gave them all a date of 1/1/1980. But, if I had sorted the images by name, because they are named img_number, I could have renamed them in creation order. I imagine you must be messing with a odder collection of images than just a single memory card folder. |

Aw, Dad, you've done a lot of great things, but you're a very old man, and old people are useless

You can right click a directory, sort all the files by creation date, last write date and things like that. Then choose and name and tell it to automatically add a counter. name-001.jpg name-002.jpg name-003.jpg ... You can also grab the subdirectories in directories and have it do them as well. It's good. |

I've been using Bulk Rename Utility for a couple of years now.
It's extremely functional (I'm still finding new uses for it) and it's also free. http://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/Main_Intro.php Cheers. |

Yeah... I was going to mention Bulk Rename Utility also, but Lisa beat me to it. It is incredibly useful, and is FREE (best of all). It also does give you the ability to sort by Date Taken!
