Pretty sad. A unique character who really lived with gusto, that's for certain. I really expected a croc would have done him in...but a stingray barb? Through the chest? Ye Gods...

Wow, that sucks. He was kinda goofy but it's hard to deny someone with that much zest for life. He just had a kid a few years ago too I think.. bummer.

I find myself disappointed. If he was gonna go, you'd reckon he could have been bitten by a snake or eaten by a bloody great crocodile.
I went to his zoo a couple of years ago, it was fun. It's an hour down the road from us. We didn't see him but we saw his little daughter... I feel sorry for his family.

I used to like him until I saw the footage of him feeding a croc, while holding onto his then 1 month old son. But very sad indeed.

That which does not kill us, will try, try again.

I guess we all knew he was headed down a road where something like this could happen, but I sure was surprised when the news this morning reported he'd been done in by a stingray.
Just in case anyone's heading for a place that has rays in the waters, be sure you do the stingray shuffle from the time you enter the surf until you leave the water. R.I.P. Crocodile Hunter

Very sad news I too figured it would be a alligator that would get him. It's always sad when someone that young dies and leaves young kids behind. RIP crazy man!

My wife started crying when I told her. I think one the saddest parts of this was that he didn't get killed by a Crocodile. I would think that would be the way he would want to go out. But then again, the Croc would have probably been hunted down and killed and he wouldn't have wanted that.

You had to know that something was going to happen with him. The things he would do were just crazy. But a stingray ???
It is apparently very very rare for death to be caused by a sting from a ray. Leave it to him to accomplish accomplish it. The greatest tragedy is the two young children that now have to grow up without their Dad. |

Arghhhh...submit yer sites ya ruddy swabs!

Crikey! (somone HAD to do it!)
It is surprising that given his close encounters with so many very dangerous predators, that he ends up being done in by a very rare incident. Also, agree that it's probaby best it was a ray that got him. He most definitely would not have wanted an animal destroyed for having taken his life. Had it been a croc or some other land dwelling critter, it probably would have been hunted down and killed. He did have one helluva life... R.I.P. Steve |

I head this yesterday, I too couldn't believe it. I was sure he'd be eaten by a crock or bitten by a snake and go that way. But a stingray barb through the heart? omg what an odd way to go for someone that was around so many deadly predators all his life.
His wife and kids must be devestated. I can't believe his daughter is 8, I remember seeing pics of her about 3 years old. He is just 1 year younger than me. Makes you realize any of us could go any time. R.I.P. to one of the most unusual guys I ever saw on TV

Too bad about leaving the family behind...
Though I'm am happy to see he did what he loved best until the very end. It's almost inspiring... he pushed, and pushed, and pushed... based on what was published on the TV, I can't imagine he would have had it any other way. And what could more educational than leading by example? Remember kids, don't play with wild animals! Even the skilled professionals can't predict or control everything.

that's sad news...
i thought it's more likely for a crocodile to have him killed instead of a stingray. he's a tough guy but had been very unlucky, may he rest in peace.. i hope his family would recover from his death soon enough |

As rare as it is to get it from a Ray. Imagine how rare it is for one to get you in the heart. After that happened he had no chance, even if he had a trauma surgin on board. I had no issues with him holding his child, most of the crocks you see him feeding were more interested in the torn meat he was dangling in their faces. Sure he would have tossed himself in front of it to save the child like any normal parent. It's sad that such a wild and crazy guy who not only provided entertainment for adults but drove kids crazy with his speach and antics had to go. I guess his message to little kids about not doing what he did will really hit home now. Wonder if the wife will bring the kids back to the states for good now. Just a shame..
