OSCommerce

Wow I just learned that I have OSCommerce (which I understand is great) on my server and I was looking to get a shopping cart for the t-shirts, mousepads, videos, etc. BUT I CANNOT FIGURE OUT how to set it UP!
I know I am "sometimes" blonde...but in this case...haircolor isn't entering into the equation. Is this as hard as it looks?
Wah!

Linda

Once you go into the admin section, its just a matter of adding categories and items.

About the only confusing part is when you use a payment processor that is not supported either in their system or via contributions.

Doing soft-downloads is also a little confusing.

Basically, go into Catalog, Add categories (T-Shirts, Mousepads, Videos) or Clothing, Downloads, Accessories or whatever.

Then click the folder next to the category, add a New Product, fill in the info, done.

To do downloadables, add the product as above, go into Product Attributes, Version = Version, value = Downloadable, hit update. Then go back in, edit, set the filename, days and # downloads. I believe the default is 7 days, 5 downloads. I forget where that is set.

Integrating with your credit card processor requires poking through the contributed entries, setting the payment type as active and changing whatever. There is a netbilling module in there since CCBill and a few of the other IPSPs won't touch physical product sales.

Hi,

What payment gateway are you using for real time processing? Netbilling has a free OScommerce module if you are interested.

Thank you, Mitch Farber

I wouldn't trust that the version of OsCommerce installable via your host's control panel (or whatever) is current.
Typically, things like osCommerce and phpMyAdmin are several versions out of date.

If you can ... get the latest stable version from oscommerce.com and either install it yourself or hire someone (like me - topical spam!) to install it for you.

osCommerce is definitely a powerful shopping cart, catalog, billing, shipping script. And it can be very overwhelming upon first glance. However, once you get things set up it is a great product (open source or commercially licenced).

And as Mitch mentioned it does have *many* billing options either built in or easily added as plug-ins including NetBilling.

Last I checked there were around 2,400 plug-ins available for osCommerce for a wide variety of features.
