Question I can only get to certain sites all of a sudden? Help!

I have crappy verizon DSL now after i had problems with comcast in Dec, all of a sudden since about 3am I can't get to about half the sites online, and doesn't seem to be a pattern to it? I can get here but not gfy, can get to half of sponsors but not the others and tried different countries etc, doesnt seem to make any difference. I rebooted modem and computer didn't fix anything. I can't even get to verizon.net to see if they are having troubles.

Any ideas what to do?

Have you tried changing from your ISP's default DNS to something like open DNS or Google DNS?

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

Haven't tried that yet, where would I change it? Is 8.8.4.4 google? here is another really weird thing, so i can goto half my sponsors i checked, now i went to crakrev and it loads great but then on the same site i tried to load a preview link to freecamsexposed, which is different domain, but i am sure in same datacenter and prob same server farm and it doesnt load at all. WTF I never had this kind of thing happen.

The first set of numbers is Open DNS and the second set is Google DNS. Either should work.

I'm a Mac user so explaining how to setup something on Windows is hard for me to do, but you change the DNS in your TCP/IP control panel.

Do you have a router? The values should be changed in there.

Okay, so you need to log into the modem through your browser. If you don't know how then you can find the instructions on the Net. (You likely would have had to do this to set it up.) Then find the DNS settings and change them to the values Cleo mentioned (Open DNS or Google). Hope that helps.

I thought the DNS settings on the computer would override any settings in the router since the computer would no longer be relying on the router for DNS info.

I would think so too but it worked for me. Funny, I ended up having the same problem as babymaker. A website that I am developing suddenly disappeared from my computers at home (Linux and Windows). I could view it on my Android phone browsers though. Changing to Open DNS on my wifi modem (provided by my ISP) instantly fixed everthing.

If you set it on the computer, it will override the settings in the modem. If you have your computer to obtain an IP address automatically, and have it set to obtain DNS servers, then it would pull it from the modem (or gateway).

If you set the DNS servers on your computer, it would override the settings from the modem.

A while back there was a virus that would change the DNS settings on gateways through javascript. It is also possible that is what happened, and, one of the DNS servers happened to get shut down. It would be interesting to see what the previous DNS settings were.

http://cd34.com/blog/web-security/ma...middle-attack/ was one potential outcome.

That's what a did! It automatically gets my DNS from the server. Thanks for the good read.

Update: anyway was tired as hell needed some sleep, so went to bed for along time lol and woke up and all was normal again, so maybe verizon was working on something locally? Hope it stays working nice, is it better to switch to open or google dns anyway tho? Does it make things faster or more secure or something?

I would be curious to hear what your DNS settings are currently set to. It isn't extremely likely that Verizon's nameservers went down, though, wouldn't be unheard of.

OpenDNS has an odd history - at one point they were siphoning off records that weren't found and presenting a portal page and capturing that traffic. They stopped doing that after a while, but, it is something to be aware of.

Google DNS reports back the queries that come in to them, so, it is another point of information they can gather for their preferences. Whether that bothers you is a decision you need to make. Google is using that data to analyze where people are going, etc. and uses that in conjunction with social signals to track things.

Faster? Both OpenDNS and Google DNS use anycast in multiple locations - they are likely to be faster than Verizon's nameservers.

Here's my settings, can't find where to change anything in Win7? It's annoying was easy in XP, checked a ton of places don't see any options for this.

That screen shot shows that you are getting your DNS from your router.

What DNS is your router using?

Open a web browser and go to the address 192.168.1.1 to log into your router.

Your computer's DNS is set to the router's address so it is pulling its DNS from the router.

If you can figure out how to change the DNS on your computer then it will no longer be pulling its DNS from the router.

Yea i have no idea on Win7 lol seems to be a pain in the ass, probably someone knows will post it, will give one or both of the other DNS systems a try see if its more stable or faster But the problems have been gone so far since then

Yea Win7 seems to be really made for the consumer with not much ability to change things, more like just use their presets.
