Online World Entertainment - Check Scam/Fraud

I noticed that my checking account was off by $29.95 today & found a check posted that I did not hand write or enter via their online payment system:

Payee: Online World Entertainment
Date: May 16 2011
Amount: $29.95

There's a thread on it over at GFY:
http://gfy.com/showthread.php?t=1023...+entertainment

I see that Simon got hit too

The one thing I contributed to the thread was this:
Quote:
...On your check, the number 7478 is referenced in the memo. The number 15041 is referenced on mine. This number seems very familiar to me, like an old account number for an affiliate program, but I can't find anything on my system when I do a search

So I guess I'm asking of that number your your check rings any bells or matches up with an affiliate account number.
So 2 things:
1 - Look at your bank account to see if you were also hit by this scam/fraud
2 - If so, does the number near the memo mean anything to you?

So they are basically writing checks using your checking account information.

Seems like a real low tech way to try to steal money and one that is very easy to get caught doing.

Checked my accounts just now and nothing on my end. It would be real easy for me to spot since I haven't written a check in years.

Yep, they did try to get me too. My bank reversed it that day and sent the report to their fraud department. Unfortunately the bank removed the check image from the online archive so I can't see what's on the memo line. Maybe they can show it to me next time I'm actually at the bank.

Damn

I got hit too for 24.95 .

Happened last Thursday.

Seems like they are creating their own checks and cashing them.

What a mess! Now I have to close my account, make a police report and deal with this crap.

Just ordered checks too. What a waste

They hit me too. I wonder if they got this information from the old epass?

Everyone keep mentioning that epass is a common thread between everyone, but then again, how many webmasters did you know that didn't have epass?

In my case, I have multiple checking accounts and that was the one that I used for epass. None of my other accounts got hit. Matter of fact, I don't use that account anymore and it only had around $5 in it and that charge over drew it. I've been meaning to close that account for a while...just never got to doing it. Guess I better do that.

I saw that charge today when I got a notice that the account was overdrawn and logged in. I had no clue what it was and told the bank that there must be an error. That was this morning. Then, I came here tonight and saw this thread...

I'm not saying 100% that it had anything to do with epass...it's just awful coincidental in my case. If any of my other business accounts get hit, then it can not be epass. That is not the case so far though.

damn check fraud

I was hit too starting last Thursday. Check number 7104 then another one that shows Linkedin both are for 24.95. Also one of my sites has been down from a certain hosting provider since last Thursday and they say they are working to get my site back up but are not giving me a clue what's going on. Very frustrating Memorial weekend for me.

Not that it matters at the end of the day. I think this has to do with ePassporte. It's really the only online thing I can think of that would link us all together. That's the only account out there that I connected with my checking account number this way.
