Thumbs down Network Solutions front-running potential domain

Seems they are registering them if you only search for them, so you then have to get them from NS at inflated prices.

Network Solutions holds the domain for up to four days, during which time a customer can register it only from Network Solutions and after which it again becomes generally available if unregistered, Wade said. But that feature, she said, is a "pre-emptive" measure to protect customers--from front-runners.

So don't use their search facility. There are plenty of others around and I've never known a domain to be bought before I've got there just because I've done a search and not registered immediately.

If it helps, see if you can unlock your domains. I have a Tucows/OpenSRS account for domain holding or warehousing with DNS/DNS pointers if required. PM me with what you can and can't do and I'll provide the rest at a lot less than mentioned.

"The standard domain name registration fee at Network Solutions is $34.99--significantly higher than the leading alternatives," complained one commenter."

Yeah, $26.00 higher than I pay.......... scamming pricks

And I haven't used them in years - will never use them now.

We've transferred most of our domains away from NetSol. With one domain I made the mistake of correcting some information on a domain listing before transferring it. NetSol put a "registrar lock" on the domain for 60 days due to the changed information. Because the domain needed to be renewed within 55 days and we couldn't transfer for 60 days, we wound up having to pay the $35 NetSol renewal fee instead of the $9 it would have cost otherwise.

In the old days we had a lot of domains registered through NetSol, but over the years they've convinced me to never use them for anything again.

I didn't know Network Solutions dropped their prices so much. I remember paying $100 back in the day.

I got away from NetSol years ago. Prices are WAY to high. Unfortunately, almost all of my mainstream webdesign clients insist on using them. If I try to recommend an alternative, they won't budge. Oh well, it's their money....

I still use NetSol but pay 15$ a domain. I could register for less but I like the fact that they remind me about 20 times before a domain expires.

I assume most places do the same - Directnic gets damn right annoying with their reminders to me about domains that I just want to float away

When the domain register I used to use got it's accreditation revoked my domains ended up being split between three different registrars. All three notify me every few days for a couple of months before the domain expires. So did the other two I used to use.

I use reseller club and pay $7.40 a year...it's a pretty sweet deal, way better than dotster at $15 bucks a shot...and with a cheapie like domainsarefree.com, which is an arm of that shit hole globat hosting, you get what you pay for when you only pay $1.99....resellerclub has been the shit for the last two years...a great way to lower the overhead... =)

i searched for 3 domains a few weeks ago, using my url location bar, the next day i went to register them and they were taken so dont ever even just use the location bar, unless your going to register it right away.

I gave up on Network Solutions years ago. Besides having outrageous prices, their customer service isn't the best either.

Can I make a shameless plug here and say that we use http://register-domains-for-less.com (a reseller for godaddy that we own). Let me tell you, they bother the hell out of you when a renewal is coming up, and the domains are safe there...I sold one last year and I thought they were going to ask for my fingerprints and a scan of my eye to prove that I owned the domain before they'd let it go. Of course, it's also very inexpensive to register domains and to renew them. I search for new domains fairly frequently and have never had one registered while I was thinking about registering it.

Man, Network Solutions used to be top notch for DNS mgmt and domains. Now they are just overpriced with nothing to justify their higher prices. And now this scammy practice. Boo

For future reference, when plugging your domain reseller company, leave out the bit in brackets. If you want customers, you defiantly DON'T want people to know that.

Thanks ecchi, I didn't want to insult anyone's intelligence here. I know that a lot of folks had issues with godaddy at one time. I even spoke with the President a few times, back when there were rumors that it was easy to steal domains from godaddy...I don't know him, but I had close to 3000 domains registered there and that got their attention when I threatened to move. Now, it almost takes an act of congress to just move one of your own domain names when it's registered there...don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, safe is good. I also use Moniker but like godaddy a bit better.

A little update.

Network Solutions sued for price fixing
Today, domain hunter Chris McElory chucked a federal class action lawsuit at Network Solutions, insisting that the Comcast of domain registrars uses "fraudulent and deceptive business practices [to] effectively trap consumers into paying its grossly inflated domain name registrations fees".

In the words of Brian Kabateck, one of McElory's lawyers, Network Solutions is guilty of "a very sophisticated form of price fixing".

Another Network Solutions ripoff, their pricing is ridiculous, other offer better service at a quarter of their price. I prefer Moniker (auto rebilling, privacy, awesome service) and still have a few with Directnic (not the cheapest, around 15$, but very reliable)

I got tired of the registar alternatives and became my own registar. So I use http://www.pixelpiedomains.com/ I get a great price, and my clients/customers get domains for 9.75.
