BingBot WTF?
I have one site that is getting hammered by BingBot, day after day, 10K to 15K hits per day. My other sites, just the occasional sniff from BingBot. There's certainly not been any associated increase in SE traffic.
Does anyone have any idea WTF may be going on? |

Do you have forms on the binged site? I find TGPs and link lists get both lots of mass auto attempts to fill in the submit form (not very hardcore attempts - they are thwarted by the most basic of catchpas) and bings at about the same time. Failing that, look at your full target URLs. ClitPass gets binged a lot, it also gets a lot of attempts to break into some old accounts system that PC had for surfers (so I get hits like http://clitpass.com?ID=1234&PASS=aardvark). I am guessing the binging is part of some auto break in software, and the mass of either auto log ins or auto form fillings is part of the same thing.

I have a section on one of my sites that I set up for testing. When I did it I forgot to block the bots and I ended up with my test stuff in the bing index. I later changed out the robots.txt but bing kept on coming back and ignored the robots file. So, I changed out the name of the folder and put an htpasswd in front of it.
Bing came by for months, multiple times a day, trying to get into the original section even though it was now getting 404 on everything. It kept that up for a good long while, I think at least a year before I saw it slack off. |

I'm tracking this with a traffic trade script on my TGPs. It's smart enough to know it's a SE Spider (by User Agent) and not force any of the outgoing clicks to my trade partners. So it's really not hurting anything, but I'm just wondering why just that one site?
I don't know what page(s) it's hitting other than they are thumbnail pages, as those are the ones with the tracking code embedded. |
