Don't uipload .htaccess in binary mode

Got this from tech support at my server concerning broken images:

First off, your .htaccess file was uploaded in binary mode. This may have been the issue. So nothing was changed in your code, and we just removed the garbage that gets dumped into a ASCII file when it is uploaded in binary.

As for the movie files not being able to be blocked.. they can be blocked if someone was to embed the movie into the html of their site, but no one ever does that. So, they just have links to your movies, and there is no way to stop a link to a movie on your site without some special coding from a script.

It doesn't hurt that you have the movie extensions in your .htaccess file to be blocked, but it probably won't ever protect anything.

They also said they checked four of my galleries from different locations and all images load fine. Anyone see any broken images on these sites?

Some of the images load very slow or not at all.
Again it may be my cable provider. (Quite slow today)

Who is your host? I want to make sure I don't use them. .htaccess will usually block the hotlinking of .wmv files if they are linked to, but NOT if the file is embedded on the hotlinker's page. And YES - people do that! |shocking|

Oh, as far as your images go, I only see the problem in IE. All is fine if FF. The gallery pages seem to load fine for me, but if I refresh (in IE), random thumbs will be missing each time. Maybe you uploaded your images in the wrong FTP mode too.

As far as I know I haven't changed any FTP settings. Where do I check the settings? Should html pages, images, etc. be uploaded in binary or ASCII? I thought the ASCII was for special things and you have to "make a selection" to do that. I haven't changed any settings that I know of.

But then again, if I uploaded in the wrong format, wouldn't ALL the images be affected?

It's too early for all this. I need a drink...

Well, here's a new wrinkle. I decided to go work on a site and when I click the index.html file on my hard drive, the page opens in a different format from what I usually get. It's some kind of IE page that I usually don't see. I can view source and work on the page but the whole layout is different. I even got completely off line and got the same thing. WTF is going on?

Reboot your PC and see if anything mysteriously corrects itself. It may be a matter of simple frustration right now and you're clicking the wrong things. Slow down. Reboot. Then take another try.

I don't know if this will help with your images or not but you did not declare your doc type. Put this before your html tag.
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd">

Then you will have to add quotes around some values. border="1" cellpadding="0" etc. Then validate the code at w3.org and see if it makes any difference.

The easiest way is to use the developer extension in FF...one click w3 validation

I did that and it said "No character encoding found". Their page with info on that had some kind of parse error so I couldn't find out what's missing. Any suggestions?
