How is Webair?

Is anyone using Webair? I know they use to be highly recommended, but I haven't heard anything in a couple months.

I noticed they're offering virtual plans with 5TB/month for around $10. I was thinking of picking up a cheap account just for giant movie galleries on The Hun.

I've used their virtual servers for quite a while now and haven't had any major problems. They're always quick to respond to any questions, the admin is easy to use and I've never had any big downtime. (knock knock lol) The pricing was a little different when I signed up so I can't comment on the current plans but I've been very happy with them

Do you have any Mysql databases on their virtual servers? If so, how's the response time? Also, have you had any large bursts of traffic (like you might get from a Hun listing)? Does Webair handle it well, or do they throttle it?

Thanks.

I'm interested in this as well. I saw the webair fella' breezin' by but it seems like he/she just left the standard sales message and neglected to respond to the issues addressed in this thread... I wonder why

Ponygirl, if you don't wanna go public with this, could u send me a PM as well?

Thanks for all the input everyone! Signed up for the 1-year plan. $10 per month is a pretty good deal. Hopefully they can maintain their level of service at those prices.

I had a virtual account with Webair. This was before they started with these mega deals trying to compete with Dreamhost. They could NOT satisfactorily handle scripts running on MySQL databases. At times things were running so slow the site was effectively down and it took more than a few support requests to get things fixed (which they never really were).

1000 GB storage + 5 TB bandwidth for 6 bucks/month. It almost sounds too good to be true.

I wrote a long post about how Dreamhost has been good to me but that would probably be somewhat unethical considering it's a thread about webair.

I would however like to reiterate the questions that were ignored earlier...

JohnnyR - basically what I said was that I'm very happy with my Webair hosting, I've been there for a while now and never had any really big problems. If you search around, you'll see there's been a couple of downtimes but I hear that about every host, and no one can really claim 100% uptime, IMO.

That said, I've never had big huge spikes in my bw usage, like getting listed at the Hun would cause. I've spiked a bit, double my usual usage, at times and have had no slowdown or other problems that I knew of. I just got charged for any extra bandwidth over my plan.

I do run scripts and have sql databases, and have never seen any big slowdowns on my pages. They were also very easy to set up as a noob, which helped too Anytime I've had questions or needed anything done with my account, the service has been friendly, helpful and quick. I've used the ticket service, phone contact and the live help (when I was eligible to use it, anyway) and always was impressed with the level of service.

So that's why I say I like Webair

I'm always leery of those plans with the huge amounts of bw/month, I might use them if I was only hosting static stuff, galleries or freesites, but with scripts and databases etc. I feel more comfortable with a plan that might have less bandwidth but more stability. I'd never burn through that much anyway.

And Buncha, thanks and I'll be interested to hear how that plan works out for you.

Hi Johnny R.

I'm probably in the same boat as you. I also have Dreamhost, and they've been pretty good to me too. I'm really not looking to replace Dreamhost. At $10 a month, I can afford both DH and Webair.

There are a few things I don't like about Dreamhost, and I'm hoping they will be better on Webair.

There have been two (maybe three) instances where DH has choked on a Hun or Worldsex listing. Once they shut down the domain entirely. The other time they throttled the traffic to the point where you couldn't bring up any pages. Both times, I contacted customer service, they quickly moved me to a new server and there were no more problems. In the end, I lost at least 3-4 hours each time, and that could be a couple sales. But there have been many Hun/WS listings that ran smoothly with no problem at all.

Dreamhost customer service is not always efficient. Sometimes they answer in an hour or two, and sometimes it's 24 hours or more (even when there's no major outages). I'd hate to have a real problem, and wait 24 hours for them to answer the first email.

I have a few blogs on DH that I wish were faster. I don't know if that's my problem or the DH MySQL databases. Also, some scripts don't work well with Dreamhost. They often use some funky homebrew stuff to run the servers. So it'll be nice to try them on another host.

Despite those few problems, I generally love DH. Easy to use, lots of toys, tons of bandwidth. I don't lose any sleep worrying some foreign message board is going to hotlink my content and I'll wake up with $100 in overage charges (had that happen with my first host years ago).

So I'm looking forward to playing around with Webair and seeing how they stack up against DH.

Hey Buncha,

You have some valid points and I need some more hosting anyways so I wanted to give them a try as well... but I was instantly turned off by the $50 bucks setup! It's hilarious, ask 50 bucks as setup fee for an account that's created automatically??? What's up with that? I would've gotten a plan from them if it were not for that un-motivated charge (makes u wonder what's next).

As a comparison, Dreamhost gives you a $97 discount (so you end up paying $23 for a year's worth of hosting).

I'd much rather go with Cpanel instead.

Wow, that does sound too good to be true. Hosting is getting dirt cheap these days, I could probably save 80% of what I am paying now for a host, I'll have to start looking around. Last time I went host shopping I needed so much space that getting a virtual account wasnt even an option and I have less than 100 gigs, but am probably gonna be needing quite a bit more here soon. Whats crazy is if that 5.95 a month plan is really all its cracked up to be it would be able to host everything I have on my dedicated. With things getting more and more expensive here lately around here, cutting some costs couldnt hurt any. Something I'll have to consider this coming month since I gotta pay my server bill tomorrow.

About Webair and/or Dreamhost. Wondering if these hosts have the latest zend optimizer (i think version 3) cause I need to check out certain scripts and the host I've been using up until now doesn't have zend optimizer 3 so it doesn't fly.

Thanks

P.S. this would be on shared hosting, just in case anyone knows and can help me out

I tried webair for a bit, but there is a lack of communication between support and accounting and after I paid my bills to them the suspended my account over like $8 in additional IPs.

Since this was on a friday and acocunting was gone for the weekend I was outta luck until monday and by that time, I moved all my sites to another host and was back in business.

So just make sure your CC doesnt expire or anything normal cos they were pretty quick on the trigger to shut down my account over a fairly simple issue.
