I Have A Dilemma

I got a phone call from a friend 2 days ago. (not a high school pal but close enough. Go camping with and he is good friends with a good friend of mine).

Keep in mind noone where I live in Ottawa here knows what I do. Only childhood friends back home 800 miles away know.

He went to a seminar on opening an adult paysite. A turnkey program run by a company called Global Premier. For $8000 Cdn ($6400 US) and a recurring amount of $250 and 5% of all sales they build you a pay site and host it and run a mailer for you daily and supply all the leased content. It doesn't sound too bad but obviously it's not great.

He owns the domain and finished paysite design.

Here's my delimma.
He called me back just now and is seriously considering it. He called me based on my success with the internet promoting casinos. LOL
He thinks I promote Casinos as all friends here do. I think I should call him and tell him everything I do. Talk to him about how I may be able to give him some help and guidance on driving traffic to this new site other than the mailers should he decide to do it.

What do you guys think?
Should I tell him not to do it? They say he'll make $1000-1500 a month the first few months and should reach $35K US the first year so a reasonable amount on their part.

I think telling him what I do is ok since he is considering doing it now.

Input please?

The reason I did not jump down his throat and said no is it is not as easy starting out now to make money with free sites as it used to be and getting listed at TGPs is almost gone for newbies.

Should I tell him NO?

I think he would definately have a better chance of success with you showing him better ways to invest his $6000. That's a pretty good start.

Just think how he'll feel when he loses that money and finds out that you knew all along. Or even if he doesn't find out, how you would feel knowing you could have helped him.

It's an easy answer I think

My first thought is saying Are You Fuckin Crazy?

He could live on that money for a few months until I show him how to make $2K consistently and then he should be able to make $3K or more on his own from there.

Am I wrong in this thinking?

Ramster, try this.

Reverse the situation. Were it your friend with the knowledge, and you about to make an investment, would you hope he'd share his knowledge with you?

And keep in mind that he trusted you with knowing *he* was considering the porn business.

I'd tell him. then tell him you'll show him what to do, etc. for XX/hour. I wouldn't do it for no $$ cuz he's ready to spend 8K or so.. at least make a consultant fee.

So basically everyone is thinking the same thing I'm thinking right?

He could save his $6400 US and get some domains, a host and content all for under $1000 and if he has any skills I could show him how to make $2K a month no problem within a reasonable amount of time right?

If someone new started out and had a little help and made a free site Every day subbing to 50 LL what is reasonable for him to make? $2K within 2 months?

I think so, easy desision.

You could call him a pervert & make him feel horrible about wanting to start up an adult site & then give the company $8k yourself

Ram, it's a total ripoff, a con, and a scam, and you should tell your friend that he should run away from it as fast as he can, and do anything he can to get his money back if he's already invested.

I TOTALLY agree with Greenguy here. I run a design firm in South Florida. This is a question I get occassionally... a client will call into the office and say "XYZ Company told me they would build my site, supply me with content and promote it for $xxxx. They tell me I'll make $xxxx in the first two months...bla, bla, bla".

You have to think motivation here folks. If their program is so terrific, they would obviously make more money if they built the sites for themselves, rather than 'helping' newbies by involving them.

Mmmm. I agree. I see so many new people in my line of work who have bought "turn key" sites with all of these promises that never turn out.

I see noobie webmasters spending as little as $200 to $500 for turnkey setup and then paying some $75.00 recurring and netting 50% of sales. LOL, sounds like an affiliate program that costs to join and they charge you every month.

A better idea, if he wants to do this and has $8000.00 to spend, then he's got a pretty good start and a hella lot better chance of success if you and other good people show him the right way.

In my opinion.

Run away!

Seriously though, who is this company Global Premier and what are their references? Do they have any case studies or satisfied clients? Or are they just another company that promises the world and delivers cheap plastic globes?

Where's that thread... somebody here just got screwed by a turnkey adult company that didn't deliver... you should show him that one... lemme look.

Well, as my dear old pappy used to say, when you have a dilemna - make dilemmanade. He was senile.

Selena made and outstanding point. Your friend is obviously not anti-porn, so your little secret would not make look upon you poorly.

As Bill stated, those turnkeys are such a nasty rip-off. I've never heard a turnkey success story, but I've heard of plenty of turnkey disasters. Hell, if he really wants to do this, hook him up with a top-notch designer like Urb, help him indentify the niche he is best suited for, and select some content. Then start tutoring him. Otherwise the poor man is going to learn a horrible lesson, I fear.

Ramster, if you want, tell him, hey, I got a buddy who's in the porn business and he can probably help you out. Me or anyone from this board with enough time to spare can school your friend, let him know its a scam and send him off in the right direction.

Well, don't let him lose the money no mater what.

1st you need to determine if he is of the sort that *can* do adult full time.

Does he have any design skills?

He'll appreciate you being candid with him...hopefully.

Just give him the real deal. If he has you to feed some traffic then he's way ahead of the game.

Then send him here.

Ok it's a done deal. I play basketball tonight at 8:30 so I called him and said I'd come by afterwards about 10:30.

Basically told him talking with others it's a bad thing. I outlined that with $500-1000 he could buy some domains, get hosting and get content for a month to create mini sites promoting other companies for 60% of all revenue.

I'll show and tell him eveything I do tonight when I get there.

Why do I feel like I'm coming out of the closet or something?

It's probably some kind of intervention. All of your friends and family are suspecting you of being involved in porn and this was just an elaborate setup. Once you tell your friend, he'll start shaking his head and all your friends and family will start coming out of their hiding places to help you.
