Domain Appraisals
Are any of these any good?
I tried Nameboy the other night just for the hell of it. I was very surprised that they didn't just spit out crazy ass numbers like most do. And then yesterday I had someone wanting to buy mvtalk.com for a Mona Vie message site. Never heard of it but that seems to be a different story. Anyway, I decided to get an appraisal for it just as an idea and low and behold, Nameboy claimed it was worth over $10k. Even without any idea what it is really worth, I know it's not worth anywhere near $10k. |

Just out of curiosity, I submitted a couple sites to Name Boy and see what they come back with. Can't imagine it being even close to what they are. LOL

Kids are great, Appu. You can teach them to hate the things you hate and they practically raise themselves now-a-days, you know, with the internet and all

I can't see how these appraisals can be of any real value.
Nameboy tells me one of my domains http://www.qusk.com/ is worth $14'594. The same domain at http://estibot.com/ gives it a value of......$80. http://www.domaintops.com/ says $76. Hmmm. A rather large difference, but it was exciting for a moment. |

They must all be worthless Gary. Like I said, nameboy was kind of accurate until mvtalk.com. And it's worth "price of reg" on one of the others. That's more like it.

Moniker offers an appraisal service that has the domain(s) reviewed by their CEO and not just a collection of scripts. They say their appraisals are accepted by the IRS and domain financing lenders as accurate valuations. The caveat is that their appraisal service isn't free like NameBoy (which used to charge for theirs too).

I find Nameboy gives too many 'false' results for my searches. An example, I typed PHONE and SEX it told me phonesexx.com was avaliable and also phonesexxxx.com both were in fact taken.

seems as if Nameboy bases their number son "factors' such as length and search term occurrances...Im sure a more hands-on approach as Simon mentioned would be much better

Hiya Trixie
I'm not sure about taking an appraised domain you already own to a bank and borrowing against it. What I've heard is that their appraisals are being used by companies that offer financing to purchase more domain names. For most people it probably would be harder to find a banker who understands the adult business well-enough to realize why some domains/websites are worth so much more than others. You might check with www.domaincapital.com (a Moniker partner) which does mention on their website that they offer funding services to existing domain owners too. HTH

NO! Im not a female - but being a dragon, I do eat them.

There are a few of the domain "real-estate" companies that have come into being in the last year and a half - and are doing quite well at giving out loans/pawning etc based on their valuation in-house. Of course there are some scammers out there as well that will tell you that they "might" be interested if you will pay them an appraisal fee up front - watch out for anyone that wants to charge you unless you know them very well!!!
Jim - feel free to send me over a list and Ill give you a quick lookover value for them and what you could get with a broker |
