In the USA it will soon be fine to carry an AK-47 in public but not OK to watch people having sex in private. I know the USA is behind many other industrial nations in education but when does common sense kick in?

feeling a bit better

I know I will probably get a few of you roused up big time but believe it or not, THIS Canadian still Thanks God for America.
America is still the most powerful nation on earth. America is still the land of opportunity. America is still a somewhat Christian nation. America is still one of the biggest contributors financially to poor nations - if not the biggest. America is still the land of the free & the home of the brave. America is still way better than ANY country in Europe. America is still the only nation that stood up to Islamic terrorists. America is still the most envied nation on earth. I am Canadian of Greek descent, I don't mind telling you people this at all because you have to understand my point. Only in America with your God given right to free speech can you openly express your opinions so freely. Here in Canada, we have no opinions, because we lack an identity to our country - except for hockey & that really does not count because essentially only a couple of dozen countries really do play hockey on ice. You never hear an American say "I am an American-Greek" or "I am an American-whatever." You hear that shit all the time in Canada. In spite of the fact that you think your leader is incapable of passing his drivers exam today, be grateful for what you have, and can have in the future. The problems Americans have are quite enviable - and this is why the world has turned against you. Many of my buddies hate what America stands for. Not me. I thank my lucky stars (except when it comes to Clinton, that piece of shit - he had no right to bomb Kosovo) because if were not for America, the world would be Muslim right now. Think about it. No offense to Muslim people, just that deep down, they hate anyone not Muslim and that includes every Christian, Jew, or whatever. You will NEVER EVER hear me show ANY respect to any of the European countries - EVER. If it was not for America, Europe would still be in repairs after WWII. The EU shit their pants during Sept. 11, 2001 (except for Spain) and all but turned their back on the US. Shame on them. I hate Europe. They can all go to hell. Forget about the blemishes of the past 4 years. Every administration goes through something or another. All of you Americans should be proud of your nation. ALL of YOU. I know I would be if I was American. |

Very good post pornrex... sometimes we DO need to be reminded.
Especially in an election year... Especially during time of war... Especially during times like these... Because we have such a freedom of speech, something that many of us take for granted and others just want to take away, we tend to vent our feelings of mistrust, disgust and worry about our leader - oftentimes lumping all those feelings into anger against the country, and all it stands for, as a whole. It's easy to get carried away... The thing is a lot of times we all say we wish we could move away, far away, anywhere but here (or Canada)... but then comes the big question - where? When it comes right down to it, we might not be happy with where we are, where things are going, who's in charge and what's happening around the world, but we DO realize that things are much better here than just about anywhere else. Sometimes we DO need to be reminded... |

Let me thank you for your blind loyalty but DAMN... This is truly a first. Where someone from Canada thinks more of the current United States than I do. So, let's see what I can say America is still the most powerful nation on earth. China would probably disagree. Well, probably not since it really is only America that claims to be the greatest, most powerful nation on earth. But, if they decided to do so, China would most likely kick our asses America is still the land of opportunity. Jobs are dwindling. Of course if someone needs a job, they can go into the military. America is still a somewhat Christian nation. I don't know what this really means. Religion has no room in government. Being a christian nation is just not a plus in my book. There are over 5000 religions in the world. Who is anyone to say Christianity is right and the other 4999 are wrong? America is still one of the biggest contributors financially to poor nations - if not the biggest. A quote from the World Bank Isa's aid, in terms of percentage of their GNP is already lowest of any industrialized nation in the world, though paradoxically in the last three years, their dollar amount has been the highest. That is like saying there are two guys that want to donate money. One has $1000 and gives $100. The other has $1 million and gives $200. The guy with $1 million gave more but, WT? America is still the land of the free & the home of the brave. Again, what does that really mean? The people in most countries are free. We have some of the most arcane drug laws in the world. My wife has an uncle from California. After serving time for two felony convictions he decided that he needed to change hs life. His neighbor was driving to New York State and he decided to catch a ride to stay with my wife and go back to school. They were pulled over after a few miles and after the truck they were in was searched, the police found a joint in the neighbor's belongings. My wife's uncle was arrested for it and that made the 3rd strike. He is now serving his life sentence in a California prison. He is brave about it but...not quite free. America is still way better than ANY country in Europe. How??? How is America better than any country in Europe? America is still the only nation that stood up to Islamic terrorists. Again, how did America stand up to Islamic terrorists? By sending a handful of people to Afghanistan? You can't count Iraq in this standing up to Islamic terrorists claim. They really had nothing to do with the terrorists. I remember George Bush saying, "Well, he did try to kill my dad". I think we taught Iraq a good lesson for that. America is still the most envied nation on earth. Oh yeah...my favorite reason as to why people want to kill us. It's because they are jealous of our freedom. That is always the "Republican" reason for people hating us. They hate us because we are free. Don't get me wrong. I love where I live. I was in the military and am a disabled american. But, we have taken a terrible turn since 9/11. Our government has become the playground bully that is kicking the shit out of the kid with glasses because the kid with braces spit in our face. |

I know its not all about manpower, but I would say it sure helps when you outnumber an opponent 3/1 in several areas. these stats are from nationmaster.com incase anyone wanted to browse, very interesting things on it that I would have not expected.

I told you I would rouse a few of you up.
However, I will comment on a few of the posts that have responded to some of my comments. WRT to Parasso, I don't watch Fox News. I can't really call that an American station when an Aussie calls the shots over there. WRT to GG - that was hilarious! WRT to Jim - First of all, China does not allow the freedom to express yourself unless its in line with state policy. Period. Some of my best friends are Chinese and can tell you horror stories that "Y'all" are just not familiar with...remember Hong Kong? As far as China being one of the most powerful nations well, that depends on what your interpretation of power is. Power in masses or Power in heart. Think about it. Let's not confuse jobs with opportunity. Far too many Americans are not prepared to work at some of those jobs that have left the country. Trust me Jim when I tell you this - I can't see any of you working as slaves making running shoes or tents or shirts, especially for the amount of money that those so-called jobs are paying. If you believe that Religion has no room in government - fine. I respect that. I can also see some of your fore-fathers spinning in their graves too. Perhaps you need to spend time in some of those countries of those 4999 other religions where your voice means jack shit. I reccomend Turkey first - they'd love you there. Then if that's not good enough for you take a visit to India or even PRK. Then come back & we'll talk some more. WRT monetary aid & size of contribution towards poor countries - I won't get into that. I think America should re-consider who it gives its money to in the first place. Far too many of the jokers that rule in those contries that have received financial aid from the US have not used the $ wisely for food or medicine or education or housing - instead they prefer to buy weapons for war & destruction and some cases, shoes. Tsk tsk tsk. "People in most countries are free" - an interesting statement indeed. What countries are you referring to? Iraq? Afghanistan? China? or maybe you must be referring to Korea or Viet Nam or nigeria, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Chad, Sudan... As far as your wife's uncle is concerned, I feel terrible for the poor guy. Aren't there any good lawyers in the US anymore? Sounds like a classic case of illegal search & seizure to me. AND, America is still way better than ANY country in Europe. I will give you a moment to allow that comment to further sink in. Europeans are arrogant (except for GB & maybe Switzerland) cocksucking pieces of shit. I know this to to be true. My people are european - the first europeans I might add. If its not european (and even then europeans will think twice about that too) they don't give a shit for it. And besides, a community that considers muslims an indiginous european people, can take a hike in my opinion. Europe has far too often contradicted herself. The EC is a ticking timebomb anyways! You Americans should still consider yourselves fortunate. And you are all right as far as Republicans are concerned - they do need to re-vamp their policies, and leadership attributes. My personal belief is that if you voted him in, then don't vote for him if you're not happy with his performance for the next time. I can sit here and rebut & then all of you can rebut & this will go back and forth round and round - what will we have solved? Absolutely nothing. Be happy you Americans for your America. Its still not that bad... |

That's kind of how I feel about America right now... I love it, but it's the principal (Bush) AND principle (ideals, direction, situation) of the thing that I currently am unhappy with. BTW... on a side note... wondering if your wife's uncle has tried appeals. I know from personal insight into the California Corrections system that the 3-strike thing can be beat, especially on some BS trumped up charges like he experienced. It's been overturned before... did he have legal aid or a "real" attorney? If the former, he may want to try and appeal with paid-for legal representation - if he hasn't already. So sorry to hear that this has happened to him and the family... |

We tried appeals and everything else. A few years ago, I ended up throwing almost $100k at the problem and it didn't help. He asked us to stop. We now just send him everything that he can own while there. He has a lot of nice stuff

Most of the World's problems are caused by religion.
Countries are only geography. People are just people, no matter where they live. 2000 years and we've learnt nothing.

Military Spending Per Country in Billions of US Dollars
United States 276.7 Japan 43.0 France 39.831 United Kingdom 36.884 Germany 32.8 Italy 20.7 Saudi Arabia 18.3 Brazil 13.408 India 13.02 China 12.608 Korea, South 12.0 Turkey 10.6 Israel 8.7 Taiwan 8.042 Canada 7.5 Australia 6.9 Netherlands 6.5 Greece 6.12 Spain 6.0 Iran 5.787 Why would a country that ranks below so many other countries in literacy, infant death, criminal population, people living in poverty and violent crimes be proud of this? Don't get me wrong. For hundreds of years the USA was the best place in the world. 4 years ago we elected a man that has killed over 1,000 of his own citizens and over 15k Iraqis because "We needed to any way". 4 years ago our justice department was just (kind of at least). Today it's lead by a religious fanatic that's just as nuts as the terrorists that we're fighting against. America can be the greatest country in the world again but not when we're being lead by religious fanatics or people that see lives as expendable for purposes of winning elections. Don't kid yourself. Our country and our way of life is under attack from our own leaders. We can be the greatest country in the world again or we can keep the fanatics in office. |

I love my country I really do however, as Al Franken put it in "Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them", "You see, they(conservatives) love Americca the way a four-year old loves her mommy. Liberals love America like grown-ups. To a four-year old, everything Mommy does is wonderful and anyone who criticizes Mommy is bad. Grown-up love means actually understanding what you love, taking the good with the bad, and helping your loved one grow. Love takes attention nd work and is the best thing in the world. "
I really like how he put that. The only thing is is the neo conservative group has taken so much power that even by loving our country with "grown up" love there doesn't seem to be a lot we can do for it. It's frustrating that in the "land of the free" we have to stand by every day as we lose more and more freedom. It is really scary what's happening, but what's worse is that no one seems able to stop it. Of course we are better off than other people but we are close to losing all of that. And I don't think that it's an exaggeration. I am only 24 and just in my lifetime so many things have happened in this country that are truly troubling. I am an educated voter but what good does it do me? The America now is not the America that should be. Just my opinion.
