Hotlinking of mpg's can't be blocked...
Tech support at my server said hotlinking of avi's, mpg's, etc. can't be stopped. Is this true? Any asshole can hotlink ANY video file?? Surely there is a fix for this.

Not with standard .htaccess, however there are scripts available that will do the job.
Cleo is using one, can't recall the name off the top of my head. |

I thought it was .wmv that couldn't be blocked with .htaccess, but it would work for mpgs.

Cleo used trafficguardian.com (which went down a while back and appears to be down currently). It was an apache module which checked in with the mothership every time apache was restarted, and when their domain was intermittently unreachable, it would pull her server down until the module timed out during log rotation.
That withstanding, the module itself did do a fine job of doing precisely what it was supposed to do. It used shared memory to keep track of IPs that had hit the directories that contained content, and, if an IP wasn't in the list prior to the request for the .wmv (or any protected content for that matter), it would redirect or deny (can't remember) that surfer's request. It was pretty easy to install, a pain in the butt to get configured the first time (though the author did spend a bit of time getting it working to Cleo's specifications) and it was pretty much fire and forget. .mpg does send a referrer during a request most of the time, however, .wmv does not which is why most .htaccess rules don't work. Cleo's test request

Trafficguardian was great other then when it was bringing down my server.
I ask Sparky to disable it as I don't use wmv files and htaccess seems to be adequate for my needs with mpg, jpg, gif, and the occasional swf file but if someplace does hotlink something with no referral sent it does get around my htaccess as I allow no referral (bookmarked or typed-in) traffic. |

For a members area .htaccess works fine.
But for free sites, tgp's etc etc.... One way to make it happen is to have all your videos in one directory. Your pages with the movies have to be php or be able to handle includes. You then have a script that changes the directory name with all the movies in it every 15 minutes. Same script also edits the directory name in the links to your movies on all your pages at the same time. So someone can only hotlink you for 15 mins. Here is an example: http://gals.nudebeachmovies.com/nude...hp?affilid=214 At this moment in time the 1st video link reads: gals.nudebeachmovies.com/nude_beach_pictures_videos_07/content1168228800/nude_beach_movie_01.wmv If you read this post in 15 mins from it's post time those numbers to the right of "content" will change randomly. I'd also like to say we implemented this in 2000 when B/W was a wee bit more. Today I would not do it. I'd rather get my videos or pictures hot linked. Free advertising. You have to watermark everything though. For affiliates this will not work though unless you have permission to re watermark the video with your own url or use your own videos you own the rights too.
