I Need HD - DishNetwork or DirecTV?

OK, I guess it is time to get with the times. What do you think is better DishNetwork or DirecTV? I have cable right now and the programing sucks.

I have Dish right now and have to keep it because my wife likes Eastenders. But, it looks like directv has more hd chanels...maybe. You should check both and decided based on what you like. Dish has all the old voom chanels.

I'm very happy with DirecTV and have one of their discontinued Tivo DVR but when I get HD I may switch back to Comcast cable so that I can have a real Tivo instead of the DirecTV DVR. I've heard nothing good about the DirecTV DVR and DirecTV ended their agreement with Tivo a few years ago so their new HD programing does not work with Tivo. Comcast announced this year that they were going with Tivo and you can already get a cable card for your Tivo.

My neighbor had both and DirecTV seemed much better then Dish as far as interface but I'm not really sure which had better programing since he only used the Dish for porn.

Here are the DirecTV forums

I had nothing but problems with Dish Network. They have known problems with the hd receivers and they want to charge for a lot of channels that I think should be free, like RFD TV. I had to pay an extra $5 per month to get that. It's free with Direct TV. Also since I switched to Direct, I have had no problems with equipment.

I noticed last week that Dish has a new feature. I haven't tried it yet but it looks like you can go online and download HD movies and other shows. I may hook it up today and I will let you know how it works.

WOW, that sounds good! Jim, how satisfied are you with their service and performance? I am inclined to go with DishNetwork since my wife wants to get the Italian International Package, and DirecTV does not have anything like it that I could find.

I personally like it. And my wife loves it...she never uses the cable box. It has some odd HD chanels like Monsters (they show old monster movies in HD) and KingFu among many others. We haven't had any problems and since they stole tivo technology and lost in a court case, the dvr is really nice.

I second Direct TV. When I first signed up for HD with them, they did'nt have many channels, but last month or so, they have been adding all kinds of HD channels. Love the picture!

I am on my second HD receiver and one of the tech's kinda hinted at them having trouble with the boxes, but they have taken care of the problems very quickly.

When I moved in here the previous owners had Dish Network, but only one tv. Dish wanted like $500 to hook up another 2 tv's, wouldn't budge. Direct TV did all new with 3 tv's for free, well with 2 year contract. Funny, Dish called and ask if there was anything they could do to keep us as customers. Gee, you had your chance, you didn't want to deal, no soup for you.

Course we live in the country, there is no cable.

Dish screwed with us as well. When they lost the court case with Tivo, they had to replace all the DVRs. They wanted to take a DVR that I already paid for and not only charge me for a new one but also force me to pay $10/month for it.

I waited it out for about a year until they finally offered me a new box for free, more HD channels and a $200 credit.

If it wasn't for Dish having Eastenders, I probably would have changed a while ago.

Yah I have Direct TV . Something like 5.00 per month to add HD. I have HD for the first time. I love it. Sports are better on HD. Personally I don't like to watch my normal shows in HD. A good example is NCIS one of my favorites. Lauren Holly is getting way too old. I don't need to see here that good anymore. I need to flip on a segment of Dumb and Dumber to get the hot Lauren back in my mind.

does direcTV ever go down if your NOT having a bad storm? we have digital cable with bright house down here in FL and we hate it. it keeps cuting out and will either goto a black screen for 5-20 secs or show big box's all over the screen and freeze like that for 5-20 secs and sound will break up. we just got done watching a movie on the DVR and the last 15 mins kept freezing we almost had to just turn it off.
