My Hard Drive Crashed :(
Just incase anyone is wondering where I've been all day, the main hard drive on my machine died this morning
I did have a raid set up, but for some reason the raid was not copying over the OS files, so I can't get that drive (which sounds like it's ok) to boot. PLUS It seems the raid card installed something onto my motherboard, so when I go to put a brand new drive in there without the raid, it doesn't let me even install Windows MML (who does not do windows - LOL) is driving up here tomorrow with his nephew to hopefully solve my problems & restore some of my data. I'll be scarce for a little bit.............. |

I feel for you dude... I was just there 3 weeks ago and wish it on no one.|pcwins|
Yesterday afternoon my router stopped letting me have high speed access, it actually was clocking slower then a 33.3 modem. So I spent 3 - 4 hours on the phone with Linksys, then today bought another Linksys router "B" like I had, and it also was clocking at less then 33.3 modem speed. So I go back to Best Buy and exchange the "B" for the "G" and guess what? Still less then 33.3 modem speed. Another long ass phone call to Linksys, and it got to the point they told me that if reinstalling the firmware didn’t work to "return the Linksys and get a different brand" Thankfully it worked. I'm taking a few days to relax from it, and then going to try and get my old “B” to work again. Hate the idea of buying a new one for no reason. But it short, computers suck… they never did any good for anyone… BTW, what sense does this make… the old “B” I bought 2 YEARS ago was a version 2… the Brand new one I bought today was a “B” version 1.7, WTF? Why is this still on the market? Mine is outdated, but this new one isn’t? Sheesh………. |

It sucks whenever a HD takes a shit. Even if you think you are prepared for it, you always seem to lose something.

This is the 4th time I've had my computer's hard drive crash (along with 1 server hard drive)
I'm getting very good at it I'll start to cry if I can't get any of the data off the one drive - that will put a hurt on me. |

Ouch
That happened to me a couple months ago and I lost everything. Good reminder though I've been getting lazy with my backups

Now that a laptop is my main computer I've gotten really insane about backing up. I worry about my laptop getting lost or stolen in addition to a drive taking a shit.

Greenie - give me a call if you need a program to recover the hard drive - had it happen a while back and bought a neat utility that lets you get past the Windows BS and actually recover boot sectors worked like a charm here

His drive was a RAID. Not sure if PCs work the same but on Macs you would replace the defective drive and then after booting from a 3rd drive you would use the RAID utility to rebuild the RAID and it should be fine after that.

Linkster - MML thinks he found one that will recover the data on the mirrored raid drive - of course, I have to get this new fucking HD installed into the computer before we can do anything.

I'm doing a fresh bootable clone of my laptop's boot drive to a FireWire drive as I type this.
Going to burn some new DVD disks of all my important stuff for Luna to keep at her home today too. I do nightly backups of my laptop's home directory, but you never can have too many backups. Hard drive crashes suck big green slimy donkey dicks. |

Well, MML & Bater fixed the problem
Our best guess is that the RAM slot went bad, which fried the main HD. But the new HD is in there now & working The old hard drive is hooked up as well & we have a data recover program running it it now...and it's finding files! The only bad part is that after 2 hours, it's still at 0% complete But it is finding files, so that is a very good thing |

G.G..
I got you on private at the wrong time for sure.. Sorry about your HD but been there and suffered similar myself last Nov.
I was doing an ftp and completely deleted my folder with 2 years of my shoots and couldn't find it.. I was in my pc superstore looking for a recover programme and bumped in to a techie friend.. I bought a new hd and she gave me a recover programme.. It took over 24 hrs to find the one folder on my 40 gig drive and then almost 2 days to re-load all the info on to my new 120 gig.. So don't hold your breath while the programmes running.. Good luck |
