they live on the outskirts of town and say they can't get high speed and they don't want to move. If I was serious I would do what ever it took to get somewhere that had some kind of high speed internet. with 56k u can't accomplish crapola these days.am i right or am i wrong. Thanx much!!

You posted about being on the outskirts of town at the same time I posted.
I guess they just have to make due with what is available. Moving just to get a better connection does seem a bit drastic. If it was me I would get a laptop and drive to someplace with WiFi each day. |

so you're suggesting they move from the house that they live in to get better bandwidth to prove they are 'serious' about the adult internet business?
Not everyone can get DSL or Cable. Not everyone has a clear view of the Southern sky. Not everyone has GPRS Edge, wifi hotspots, PCS data at their house. I have clients in countries where even dialup is expensive -- and they have conducted their business through dialup because they cannot get faster connections. If they are happy with dialup, why does it bother you?

and really, what does bandwidth speed at home really have to do with it? with FXP enabled on most servers, they can download the content direct from their providers and put it on their servers, use imagemagick to tag it. Or they could ssh in and either FTP or WGET it.
I don't see any real reason that they would be that inconvenienced or need a high speed connection.

You have to use what you can get. High speed internet (cable) just recently became available here. I was one of the fist people on. But had to deal with dialup connections of less than 30k for many years before that.

i was asking the question because it seems now days if your on 56k u just cannot get as much accomplished as the competition can. if you run a tgp and u do reviews with 56k forget reviewing movie submits.

When I had dial-up I was perfectly happy. It's not until you enjoy the speed of broadband or dsl that you realize how slow dial-up is. Just because I don't bang my wife every night doesn't mean I don't enjoy it. (Not sure if that is in anyway analagous, but I felt like saying it.)

24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case. Coincidence? I think NOT!
|
You have to use the tools available to you...
I think moving to get a better connection does sound a bit drastic... particularly if you with happy with how things are. |

WHO IS FONZY!?! Don't they teach you anything at school?
|
I've been in this business 5+ years and was on a dialup connection until 2 months ago when DSL was finally made available to me.
It sucked for sure, but as Kezza said.. you have to use the tools available to you. So yes, in my opinion you can be serious about this business and still be on dialup |

Reviewed thousands and thousands of sites on dial up.
It's not the size that matters..

Here's the deal: if all you have is 56k, conduct your business in a way that works with your means. Running a movie TGP is probably NOT a good idea (and running anything where you have to review alot of stuff probably isn't best). Building and submitting free sites, galleries, graphic work, etc is all more than a little possible under your situation.
As Cleo said, get a laptop with a wireless, and get access through a hotspot in town is that is what you really need. Truly desperate? Rent a super small office in town (or a 1 room apartment) where higher speed is available and work there 10 -12 hours a day, especially if you think you can make enough income to make up the extra expenses. There are always options, work with what you got or find an effective way to make it better. Alex |

D u reviewed thousands of movie submits on dialup?
Damn u have more patience than I do I guess He won't list movies because of it, and that hurts the traffic

Probably not thousands of movies... but many hundreds of them.
View source, check the links, you don't need to watch every movie. Simple scripts can run when you're not. Like recip link checkers, etc... Save the movie category for last... they can take 5-10 minutes each. Watch tv, and review during the commercials. Did that for about 3 years before getting satelite. (I have moved twice since way back then - satelite again - on dsl now)

I guess I am just frustrated with seeing a tgp with 300k a day drop to 85k a day in 4 years. Probably has nothing to do with speed, just the blind links and the console hell sponsors that are used.

In some places it is all that you can get. For a while, I was conducting business, uploading content and the like over a sprint PCS phone! It was all the connectivity I had available to me at the moment. Now I have broadband .

Because I live in the country, I'm still on dialup. I've been on it all along, and made a substantial pile of money with it.
Like Alex said, if you are on a dialup, certain types of online work aren't practical. But, there is still money to be made. Any amount of reviewing on a dialup would be insane. Just recently cable modem became available here, but I'm not rushing to get it. I would want to keep the dialup anyway, because I have years of history with this email address. When I decide to do something businesswise that requires the speed, I'll get it, but so far I don't need it. The only time I really miss it is when I need to move stuff around on servers- so, I have domains on older expensive servers that I should move to something better, but I hesitate, because it will take so many hours to download a copy off one server and upload to another. |

i had the same feeling..i was on DSL and then i moved to a new house so there was no DSL connection in the new place. I was using dial-up for almost a month and i can't get any work done - that's because i was used to a faster connection.

Your skills and imagination are more important. I can do more on a 400MHz Win98 machine on dialup, than many people can do with a new XP machine.
but I can do even more since I switched to NTL cable. |

If someone is still not doing automated backups are they serious about the biz?
If someone is still using a CRT are they serious about the biz? If someone is still working alone are they serious about the biz? If someone doesn't go to at least 2 trade shows a year are they serious about the biz? Of course Cleo might ask... If someone is still running Windows are they serious about the 21 century? |

The guy that used to host Jim & me lives in Iowa & he had nothing other than dial-up at the time. He managed the servers thru his dial up connection & makes a very comfortable living doing so.
We only left him because we got sick of the people he was co-locating with & having to wake his family up at 5 AM if there was a problem |

ya know I have a funny story about dialup and cable
when we first moved in here cable wasnt available and the phone lines are so dirty I could only connect at like 14k or whatever on a dial up so I had to do something and started making phone calls I arranged for a full t1 to be brought in to the house the installation was like 5k and the monthly charge was like 800.00 and I had to wait like 4 months for instalation I was despreate so I signed a 2 year contract a couple weeks later I was talking to my neighbor and mentioned that it was very hard for me to work because of the dialup well it turns out he's the vice presidnt of the cable company (which I didnt know) and had cable installed in my house the next week 3 months later the t1 got installed
