How do you deal with spam

I Get a lot of spam and mostly just filter it with rules.

even still I am spending a good hour a day deleting spam and viruses

I coded all the my email links on my pages like so

<font color="black" face=arial size="4"><b>Please feel free to drop me a email</font></b><BR>
<a href = "mailto:%54%6F%6D%6D%79%40%74%6F%6D%6D%79%73%2D%62%6F%6F%6B%6D%61%72%6B%73%2E%63%6F%6D?subject=cumshots"><IMG SRC="email.gif" BORDER=0 WIDTH=84 HEIGHT=67></A>

but that didnt seem to do anything

I am thinking about switching to thunderbird since that is supposed to have very good spam filters built in to it

I would really like to hear about your failures and sucesses in dealing with spam and viruses

I use Mail.app which has really good spam filters built in. I get a bit over 3k of crap a day but I only see about 50 of these which I just click on the add to spam button.

I use thunderbird and like it.

As far spam goes it's a bitch. What a filter does not catch I hold CTRL and highlight all the spam emails then delete them with one click.

I think a few people use this:

http://www.mailwasher.net/

Being on vacation with sporadic 'net access I logged into my webmail account and have a couple thousand e-mails just from 1 account. Like 99% Spam.

Fuckers.

I use http://spambayes.sourceforge.net/ with good results after a bit of training.

Yeah, thunderbird is working great for me also. After a while with setting up the extra filters of common spam it makes most of the spam go right to the trash. Also put up folders with rules to the things I wanna keep for example different newsletters and I even make a special folder for every free site I have buildt and submitted. Get the confirmations into the correct folder in the system right away. But again, I have not been around long enough to get huge amounts of spam either. I guess I have might have some more coming my way....

I found out that I was losing a lot of mail through filters. So now, I just deal with it by hand. And, if one pisses me off just enough, I turn them in to their isps. Something that tricks me into opening it or something from the Republicans, I turn in

delete.... delete.... delete....

That's how I handle spam. I'm with ya on this one Jim, the old fashioned way is the only way to deal - I was losing WAY to many important emails with the filters, it ended up being more trouble than what it's worth.

Hmmmm - and you report the republicans? I shoulda thought of that - those spamming bastards!

I just manually delete them too... it's a pain in the ass, but the filters block out way too many of my confirmation emails or emails from sponsors.

A good tip to avoid huge amounts of spam is to keep your email address well guarded from automated email collecting spiders. I always just write blah [at] blah.com instead of typing it out, and that seems to work pretty good.

Recently i've been getting spam from people who looked up my email address via the whois info on my domains... I've even had some people calling me on the phone to advertise their affiliate programs.

I kind of do a reverse filter. I start by having the rules send everything to the deleted folder. That way I can scan through it then just click "empty deleted folder" and I'm finished. It's easier to drag the few emails I want to the inbox than the other way around. (just maked sure "auto empty deleted folders on exit" is not checked)

Then, you set up a "whitelist" rules, and start filtering those you want to keep to your inbox.

I just hand delete the 500+ spam emails I get daily. It's not really an issue.

I don't deal with spam very well. My filters are so strict that I lose legit emails now. email is no longer a viable solution for internet communication. Spammers and internet providers made sure of that (they tend to sell their customer lists to legit spammers who in turn have rogue employees selling to illegit spammers)

Norton puts about 400 SPAMs into my trash can and doesn't know what to do with the 10 to 20 it misses. I tried mail washer per DD but I just didn't like the concept of an additional application running.

I still have to manually delete 10+ emails a day but it does catch about 400 a day.

First, I cry.

MailWasher is indeed a really wonderful tool. It's pretty smart, but that can work against it. I had MailWasher working almost perfectly (except for my own mistakes) until I stared submitting again (recently) - suddenly it had a whole lot more to learn from, and that has confused it. So we're having to re-train.

But I don't know how I survived without it.

This one finally got my spam problem to a manageable point..

http://spambayes.sourceforge.net/

SpamBayes will attempt to classify incoming email messages as 'spam', 'ham' (good, non-spam email) or 'unsure'.

First you show SpamBayes a pile of email that you like (ham) and a pile you don't like (spam). SpamBayes will then analyze the piles for clues as to what makes the spam and ham different. For example; different words, differences in the mailer headers and content style. The system then uses these clues to examine new messages.

You dont set up filter words... you simply show it which emails it classified incorrectly to train it... it took about 1 month of doing this until I was getting zero good emails incorrectly marked as spam... which was my number one want in a spam filter.

I recommend Mailwasher too. I've been using it for about two years. I can filter on anything anywhere in the body or headers, I don't download my mail until after the spam has been deleted off the mailserver, and I have complete control over my filters and what I see. No lost legitimate mail.

Spamarrest is, hands down the best money I ever spent on the internet. I originally saw it when I sent an email to thehun and got it a few months later. I have seen something new just like it also. I used to use rules, filters all that crap; spam still got through constantly. The nice thing about spamarrest also is you can add/block entire domains if you wish as well as single addresses. You can upload your address book which allows you to authorize everyone on your list (of course you can remove them/block them also if you like). I am literally 99.9% spam free now that last .01% is due to the occasional person I just don't want to hear from
It uses a Turing test which completely eliminates AI generated email.
