How to uninstall a video codec?

Yesterday I installed a trial of a video compression program and apparently a new codec has been installed on my computer. Every time I play a MPEG a box now pops up prompting me to pay for the new MPEG decoder and a similar message is superimposed on the video. The movies also play fucked up.

I tried uninstalling the trial SW but it refuses because the codec is in use by WMP.

If anybody knows how to deactivate a specific codec or just delete the bugger you would make my day. I even tried installing WinAmp but the same thing happens, the new codec apparently is set to default.

Well you know boys, a nuclear reactor is a lot like women. You just have to read the manual and press the right button

You could try this: download K-Lite Codec Pack (it is freeware) and when you install it usually it detects the old codecs and asks you if you want to remove them.

Ace MegaCodec Pack did the same when I used it last time, the module who uninstalled the old codecs was called Agressive Remover if I remember well.

Never mind. A system restore took care of it. Thanks Kitty!

Glad you managed it to restore that.

Could you please tell the name of the software, this way we all will stay away from it?

The program is called M2Convert Pro, and it couldn't do what I wanted it to anyway. Not saying it's a bad program and their support *tried* to help out, but it sure is fucked up when a codec hijacks you system like that.

In general, you should be able to go to Add/Remove Programs to get rid of any rogue programs, even codecs.
