Speed comparison between DSL and Cable

I'm considering saving a few bucks per month by switching over to Verizon DSL and away from FUCKING RoadRunner. Is there a major (very noticeable) difference in speed between the two?

My RoadRunner has been busting my balls for the last two days. I called tech support twice tonight to deal with the occasional "server not found" issues and the sudden and complete lack of any data stream this evening. The DOUCHE made me go through a whole series of disconnect this/connect that bullshit, like I'm some kind of goddamn idiot, before he said, "you know what, there's currently an outage in your area." ASSHOLE! I told you my fucking cable light was out. I KNOW IT'S NOT ME!!!. Anyway, they plan on sending a tech here Sunday to check the speed of my modem - even though the issue was clearly not my modem and the outage was miraculously solved while I was on the phone with him. Sons a' bitches.

And my connection died once more while attempting to preview this post. |shocking|

Anyway, will I regret switching over to DSL?

I don't know what Roadrunner is but I have a cable connection and I'll never switch to anything unless cable comes up with something faster than cable.

Roadrunner is just run by retards. After Katrna when we were relocated to Mo, I used them. I had manyissues like you are having and got pretty much the same bullshiot from their service.

However, when I tried calling tech support to fix anything, the local office gave me their tech number to call. I tried calling it but that number did not accept calls from my area code because I was using my cell phone based out of Ms. Needless to say they got a premium cussing.

I may be mistaken, but I believe the highest speed dsl packages are still slower than a middle of the road cable package. I'd never go from cable to dsl myself, however, you mileage may vary.

Just wait until the guy comes to check it and really badmouth the people that work there and he'll prolly agree with you and hook you up nicely. I suggest telling him that they are a bunch of cluster brained buttfuck douchebag retards. That always gets em stirred.

I have Earthlink 1.5 download 128 upload ADSL as a backup and Comcast cable 6 download 756 upload as my main.

On good days the cable is fantastic. When the cable goes down the ADSl is much better then no internet. Uploading on ADSL is painful but surfing is ok. On bad days they both go down and then I just stick my finger in my twat and scream.

I had earthlink dsl and switched to road runner cable. even though i do have problems time to time with road runner, i would never switch back to dsl. it was slower than the cable i have now. And i went through 3 different dsl modems in 2 years and was charged $120 for 2 of them. I think either way you go theres going to be a downside but cable has the speed overall.

yea I would hate to have dsl. It's just not as fast for the price. Like cleo has for a backup would be good. Primary though nope. I know I don't have it available here, but I know a friend in Kansas that has like fios i believe it is from verizon and it's really nice n fast. Like up to 5 mbps a second. So maybe if that's available to you.

I was afraid of that. Maybe I'll find the time to take my modem to the local office in the next couple of days to exchange it once again and drop a couple of my well-honed dissatisfied customer lines on them. "Maybe if your tech support guys would have listened to me, I wouldn't have been forced to piss on this one."

I added my name to their list to be notified when it was available in my area. So far no fios but lots of Verizon spam to the address I gave them.

Angel also has Comcast cable as the main. The house cams run off of Comcast so we spent a lot of time on the phone with Comcast techs. Comcast finally suggested to me to buy a Lynksys cable modem (why the fuck are these things called modems, nothing is modulated) because the brand that Angel got from Comcast was POS, different brand then the one Comcast gave me, and things have been a whole lot better since.

Dude, I'd totally say stay with roadrunner...I had both time warner and cox when I lived in san diego...and when I moved to northern california I've had the luxury of trying both comcast and charter...I bought a home in charter's area and am stuck with them. I hate them more than you hate road runner...comcast was the shit but is 10 miles away...longer story shorter, you're not going to luck DSL...the whole "downstream" thing you wouldn't notice a different, but if you're runnin' you're online business here, "upstream" is what's important and DSL has no balls...dsl is comparative for surfin', but no comparison for uploading....that's my two cents...

There are a number of different DSL speeds available depending service provider, type of copper/fiber to your location, distance from your central office etc..

If the copper to your office will support it and the service provider offers it, you can get any speed line you want - down side is you won't like the price. Standard residential DSL service is slower than most cable providers. Cable bandwidth is a shared commodity so it will slow down as more users on your branch of cable use bandwidth.

Comcast won't admit or deny it but in our area, they "choke" speeds on large down/up loads. I see the most impact on uploads. What this means is I'll start an upload of say 4GB to my server - the upload starts fine at around 128kbs then after a few minutes, Comcast starts limiting the bandwidth (to make it available to other "burst" users) down as slow as 24kbs. Service providers have been using adaptive bandwidth management for well over 10 years - expect to see the same management on any "home" service - regardless of provider.

That said, if money is not an issue and the infrastructure is in place (good copper/fiber etc..) you can order any bandwidth you want - hell, I'd love to have a dedicated T-1 (1.544Mbs up/down) dropped to my house..... but I'm dreaming again.

I currently use Comcast at home as there is no good copper for any other options. I do most of my work from home and I appreciate the cost effectiveness of cable. I use Impact Telecom 1.5/128 at my office - the speed sucks but I'm getting what I pay for.

I used to have a T1 line for the low low price of about $5k/month. That was after a $15k installation fee

The bad thing was when I switched to cable, I really didn't notice a difference.

Don't ask me why, but my buddy who knows such things says that Cable will also have the capability to exceed DSL when it comes to speed. This guy hates [the monopoly] Rogers Cable in Toronto but refuses to let go because the ceiling is higher.

My Road Runner has sucked ass for the last few days as well. I didn't even bother calling them because I really fucking hate Time Warner.

Is the Verizon FIOS in your area yet? I ordered it yesterday & they're hooking it up tomorrow. I can't wait to throw my old cable modem at the Time Warner staff
