Wheither you think you can or you think you can't, Your right.
|
I had Dial-up for a the first couple years in this biz, had no choice, nothing affordable around.
Live in the country now, but lucky to get DSL. I would so dread going back to dial-up.. ronnie |

No matter how good you are at something, there's always about a million people better than you
|
I worked for years on an ISDN line which is just a like two phone lines put together. I still had to dial in. It was all I could get at the time and I made it work. What's that saying about lemons and lemonade?

I can set someone up with a solution for 56K that works better than most people's broadband connections - providing a full 100mbps pipe to the internet
cheers, Luke

Well, I live out in cottage country, so the options for anything better than dialup are pretty limited.
Been looking at satelite($1000/hardware + $100/month), but, there is a rumor from some of the local techs that I may be able to finally get DSL this summer. So for now, I wait and see. |

They have the Internet on computers, now?
|
I could manage with 56k, and I certainly would if it meant having a nice house in the country.
90% of my work can be done offline (in fact, I'd get a lot more work done if I couldn't surf or post on message boards...)

Tickler, where do you live? I am in Australia and use Telstra's one-way satellite service @ 512K down and a painful 33.6K up. I had to do this because at the time this was all I could get. I would HIGHLY recommend staying off satellite unless you have no other choice, especially if you live in a cloudy / rainy area! Fortunately for me, it only seems to be rainy once every 3-4 months here in drought-stricken Brisbane.
cheers, Luke

funny story about dial up is when I first got on line and discovered filesharing I remember having a movie download for 4 or 5 days straight and at the time no one I knew had high speed and I got it and the first thing I did was hit porn and had no pop - up blocker then and thats when consoles were popular and I had so many new windows open it was like a phone book on my monitor - dam I was scared and couldnt close them fast enough so I pulled the switch - LOL - I wish I fuck I would have started the webmaster thing then - I think we bought our first pc in fall of 99 and a year later got cable and started working on them and learning.. dam life is full of what if's and should have done that.. oh well

I love living out on the lake, take the laptop and sit down on the dock with a cold beer and check out the bikinis. Most folks that have cottages, only come on weekends and vacations. I live here year round. chilihost Actually I live in central Ontario, Canada. Yeah, I am aware of some of the problems with satellites after having a dish for years. We don't get cable TV here either. |

NO! Im not a female - but being a dragon, I do eat them.
|
tickler - just dont believe Direcways claims about upload speeds with the larger dish - I made that $1100 mistake and got slower uploads than using a modem - and if you want one of the large dishs and the router I have them for sale - I got conned by them back in June when they told me in order to get "256k" uploads you need the large dish.
They have revised their numbers to "up to 100k" - and refused to give me my money back so I stopped using them. |

Actually the one that I was checking out was StarChoice. The hardware was about $1500 when they first came out and then dropped to about $1000 a month or so later later. Also considering parking a PC a an office building a relative manages. They have a bunch of optical cable from a former tenant there that no one is using anymore. Then I can run a remote desktop, and have all the downloads/uploads run through that PC. Another problem is with the time delay with the signal bounce. If you are doing online gaming, your duck command gets there a second after you already got shot. |

I can't play many games online with sat... the only ones I have found that will work are DII, and AoM. Every other game I wait 5 min to connect to a server, but it never happens.

If you choose dialup over dsl..cable.. isdn.. sat.. whatever because it's cheaper.. and not because they're not available.. then maybe your business isn't doing so well... BUT bandwidth does not = success.. i'm sure there are lots of dumbasses out there with 8mbit dslam lines that are making fuck all and conversely others on dial-up that are making a killing..

I totally agree with useless warrior.
I had dial up from 98-2002 and didn't know any different. As soon as I got the high speed connection, that was IT and I was hooked. Have had it happily ever since.
