Putting a Price on Custom Content

Hello, all! I'm brand spankin' new to this forum, not so much to webmistressing, but I'm not in the running with you big dogs and your paysites (yet). |blowkiss|

I'm an author of erotica and have a fairly elaborate professional site for my writing because I do know a bit of programming/design unlike most authors. Of course, the govt. would lump my site in with all the rest of yours due to the adult content and even those pesky 18 USC 2257 rules apply to me! I'm looking forward to learning a lot from the rest of you in regards to affiliates, content provision, and all the fun side of being brave enough to take on taboo topics.

What I need from your expertise at the moment is in regards to pricing original content for pay sites. Here's the scenario: I'm in the running for packaging together original, exclusive story content for a fetish oriented niche and membership-required site. Right now, I'm thinking along the lines of a 1200-word or so story contributed on a weekly basis along with a provocative pick of myself...possibly not too explicit though as even the photo would focus on this particular fetish.

What most of the erotic genre writing world can't tell me is what the going rate for content is on adult content paysites these days. What price should I be asking for providing weekly installments of custom written content, sold for the exclusive use of this site and paired with a new photo each week? Of course, I don't know what kind of money the site itself brings in, though it is in connection (along with a few others) with a major star, if not THE top star, in regards to this fetish/niche. Also, the site only currently contains limited pictures and video and just a couple reprinted articles written by this star for print magazines. This site is in the midst of expanding, wanting to stand out from other sites by providing original written content in addition to the typical pics & video, etc. In other words, involving myself as a professional writer (and real-life cute gal ) is providing a great and unique service to this site.

I've even tried looking at adult site content providers and most won't even divulge their pricing without an emailed inquiry. I'd greatly appreciate any input you can offer, and I'm really looking forward to this fun project. THANK YOU!!

Hi Tara, welcome to GG&J. Nice site.

It can be hard to say how much to charge for exclusive written content. As you say, it depends on who is buying it. It sounds like the site you're writing for may not have a huge amount of cash to throw around so this could make a difference.

And I guess the other sad thing is that written content is not worth nearly as much online as it is on the net. I've been paid $700 for a 1500 word story published in a women's magazine, but in the online adult world that same story is worth about $20. Obviously that's not the exclusive rate, but it gives you an idea of how much the going rate might be.

The rates listed at Custom Erotica Source
http://www.customeroticasource.com/c...es/index.shtml
have a 1500 word custom written story at $125. I don't think that site has been updated for a while.

Oceania used to charge quite a lot for her stories but she doesn't seem to be doing it anymore.

The Erotica Readers Association can give you advice on how much to charge as well.

I would suggest you sign up at content providers. Its not an email enquiry, its an email sign up. You usually need to put your domain in as well. This is only to ensure you really are a serious adult webmaster, not just a wanker who wants to look at fresh and free porn. You have a site, so sign up. I am sure there is content site listings here at gg and jims.

Thank you so much for your reply and all the helpful info, even if it is a bit disheartening. I've seen your name around the web frequently; you're practically an icon.

With your encouragement, I'll post to ERWA as well. From "listening" in on the group's mail, it doesn't seem as though they've got "porn" experience, but hopefully they'll surprise me.

Tara, thanks for the compliments.

The call for submissions section at the ERWA http://www.erotica-readers.com/ERA/G/G-Main.htm has quite a few adult sites listed there. They listed our erotic fiction competition for us.

I'm glad you posted here. It's good to know of another writer out there. I write most of the stuff for FTG but we're on the path to outside submissions...

Grandma, thanks for pointing me in the direction of the ERWA submission calls. Believe it or not, I get quite lost in that site and still haven't figured out the navigation!

And thank you for the welcome. It's nice to find another writer who's also a true webmaster. I'm a big fan of FTG. I'm in their affiliate program, which has done better for me than any other thus far (helping me to determine just who my audience is then), and am in the process of securing a paid subscription to FTG myself through my connection with Playgirl. They're offering the perk to their "posse" members at the moment (our choice of pay sites). I'd be highly interested in any writing opportunities opening up at FTG; I'm impressed with their philosophy and offerings. Please do keep me posted.

And I have to add that it's a great treat to be corresponding with an Aussie. I fell in love with the country on my first trip over in 2000, made many friends, went back for a year solo in 2004, and ended up living in Cairns the last half of the year. I'm back in the States at the moment, but the south pacific will pull me back soon. Needless to say, it's also the location that inspired many, many of my erotic stories.
