SE Asian earthquake...not a merry xmas
"JAKARTA, Indonesia - The world's most powerful earthquake in 40 years struck deep under the Indian Ocean off the west coast of Sumatra on Sunday, triggering tidal waves up to 20 feet high that obliterated villages and seaside resorts in six countries across southern Asia. Nearly 10,000 people were killed in the devastation."
Many dead...toll rising. I've been to a few of those places. 'On Phi Phi island — where "The Beach" starring Leonardo DiCaprio was filmed — 200 bungalows at two resorts were swept out to sea.' I was there just last year. Lots of people are just gone. Poof. That's fucked up. |

Took the hint.

9 is mind boggling... in a weird way, thankful that it happened in water instead of on land... in the middle of india or something, a 9.0 could have wiped out hundreds of thousands of people...
The earth isn't in a good mood these last few weeks. Could California be next? *sigh* Alex |

It's horrible. I just heard on the news couple of minutes ago that death toll is up to 17,000
This morning it struck me that right around this time I would've been in the middle of the earthquake zone if we would've gone on our kayak trip from Malaysia to Burma. I am so grateful today that things started going wrong already around May-June this year that made it impossible for us to go I doubt us in a tent if we would be on shore or us in a small kayak would put up a match against a tsunami wave Last edited by swedguy; 2004-12-27 at 05:36 AM.. |

In 2001 my husband and I went to Phuket and Phi Phi Island. It hate to see the beautiful Thai people suffering - especially as I'm here at the beach enjoying a wonderful holiday.
I gave some money to World Vision. And I don't want to sound preachy... but if you've got a spare $10... www.redcross.org www.worldvision.com www.oxfam.org www.unicef.org

I have several friends who were on holiday in Phuket and the surrounding islands, plus some friends who live there. My friends living there contacted me last night to say they are ok, but their house was washed away. A friend on Phi Phi island said that he is ok, but several people he was partying with the night before were killed and his beachside villa was gone.... and friends in Phuket say they only just escaped and also saw many people killed. There are still some people I haven't been able to contact and because its so close to HK lots of people go there when there is a holiday, so perhaps other people I know were there that I didn't even know were going.... I'm glad I wasnt there this year What a terrible thing to happen

23K and rising..
I've been to Phuket and besides being beautiful, one of the great things is that it's so open. Like the place we stayed was on 'stilts' .. exotic at the time.. devistating now. |

Because the area affected is so wide and many of the places are both remote and poor, it will be a little while before the numbers of dead are really known. It is also likely that a percentage of the dead will either not be found, not be known about or simply not counted.
What is perhaps worse is that possibly hundreds of thousands of people will have had their livelihoods literally washed away, fishermen that lost their boats and nets, shopkeepers who have lost their businesses, farmers who's land will have been ruined by the salt water, the list goes on and on.... and these are people who live on literally nothing because they have nothing (by our standards). For those of you interested you can donate to the Red Cross via this link https://www.redcross.org/donate/donation-form.asp

I'm not a geologist but as far as I know this one doesn't have anything to do with what happens with plates in other parts of the world.
Personally I'm glad that I live where we have hurricanes but no earthquakes. |

The "doom & gloom" stuff that's on the news lately is nuts - a tsunami is not going to hit the Atlantic Coast here it North America.
There's a company here near Buffalo that makes Earth Quake Shock Absorbers - their stock doubled the day after. I guess a lot of people plan on building in the middle of the Indian Ocean in the near future. I'm with Cleo - I'll take snow & blizzards over earthquakes any day of the week. |

This map of the destruction is much wider then I realized.
http://www.cnn.com/interactive/maps/...t.exclude.html As far as worrying about something like that I would think that something like Yellowstone erupting is more likely and would be much worse. http://www.solcomhouse.com/yellowstone.htm Only one thing to do |

Sitting here looking at tits and asses feels pretty unfulfilling at time like this. I just wish I could get a ticket to Thailand.

What a fuckhead! This will be the biggest disaster in modern time for Sweden. Everybody knows somebody that where in the area when it happend! |pissed| /Thomas

I haven't liked her from the first day when she became foreign minister, I didn't like her before that either. What the article says is that when she found out about the distaster and it was known that hundreds of people had died, she did not go to work. When it was know that 10,000+ people had died, she went to the theater. 31,5 hours later she showed up at work. I've found a flight down there tomorrow. But my bank is closed, so they can't clear my CC so I can get the damn ticket. I hate sitting here not being able to do anything |
