Newbie question about hosting service....
Hi everyone,
I want to build my own adult site. I have found a hosting firm that allows adult content to be hosted on their servers. It provides 350 Gigs Storage and 3500 Gigs Data Transfer for 7$ a month is this a good deal? And one more thing if you manage to attract good deal of traffic to your website can you make good amount of money. -Thanks, Regards... |

you need to be very careful. if it sounds too good to be true it probably is. I smell a catch. there's always a freakin' catch with these people.
however, do let us know what hosting are you speaking of - you will probably get an answer from someone who has 1st hand experience with them.

Lunarpages...
By the way the name of the hosting firm is lunar pages...
They allow adult content on their servers for their 7$ per month plan but this website cannot contain TGP, free image galleries or multiple adult popups. Quoting what they said: ------------------------------------------------------------------- However, adult sites that require extreme amounts of server resources and bandwidth will be required to upgrade to a dedicated server plan. Please thoroughly read our "Terms of Service", http://www.lunarpages.com/legal.htm We allow all kinds of adult sites. Free tgp (thumbnail gallery posts), multiple adult pop ups, and free image galleries are allowed only on our dedicated plans. Feel free to be as adult as you can be under the law of California. ------------------------------------------------------------------ |

That is the definition of overselling. No legitimate host can offer that and stay in business. |

It's the typical MASSIVE over sell approach to virtual hosting. When you see a hosting offer like that, realize that you are being lied to, being treated like an ass, and continue your search. The quote from them might as well say, "we'll sell you the resources, but you can't use them."
That amount of resources would require two 200GB drives. Hell, their largest stock dedicated server ($210/month) has a single 200GB and allows 2000Gigs of bandwidth. Now compare that to their virtual offer. And that's just what it is - a virtual offer - because it's not realistic. http://www.colo-cation.com is the favored host of many people on this board. I intend on moving there as soon as I pull my head out of my ass.

I will just mention some stories I have heard happening to others with various companies like this. 1. Guy goes on the boards upset because his host told him they are shutting off his service unless he goes over to one of their dedicated hosts instead. 2. Guy is on the boards upset because while his host told him they offer unlimited monthly transfer, they put a bandwidth throttle on his site where things run so slow the site isn't even usable. If I were to bite at this deal, I'd want to be reassured that neither of these will happen to me. Even after that, I'm not sure I'd trust them. Quote:

Hello Aragorn,
Caro.net would certainly like to earn your business. We allow adult content and can make it easy to grow from plan to plan as your business increases. If you look around here on the board you will find numerous hosts who also do good work when it comes to the adult industry but if something sounds to good to be true, then it probably is, so choose a reputable host that understands your business and can grow with you. We currently have plans starting as low as $10/mo and on our shared plans your first month is FREE. Just contact me directly and I will be happy to work with you on a plan for your exact specifications. Good luck with your search, |

Do a search for hosting on this board, and you will find plenty to read...
In general, you get what you pay for, and even though more than one company are saying they will give you 2.5-3 GB bandwith every month, they'll shut you down a long time before you reach that ammount.... Overselling is the keyword...

I currently have ONE TGP site which I havent even completed yet. I originally used EuroSpeed for my hosting but they weren't all that responsive. I had been speaking with Omar and Alfredo over at SiteDepth. They started offering hosting ...maybe a year ago. I've been using them for 6 months and my site has only been down for about ten minutes total since I signed up with them. I only have 2 GB space and 90 GB transfer but Im getting it for $25. Very affordable and plenty of space for what I'm doing.

See I could out a server on my dsl connection at home and charge $10 for a 100 meg connection to customers and just have them drop off and load slow. Not to mention crash the server and get black listed for email and SEO. The key is to pay the least for the what you need and plan to upgrade to a quality host. I did this way before working at DWHS. www.dwhs.com |

ATCI has been really good for me. In my experiences, THE BEST technical support out there. I can email them ANYTHING and get a responce and resolution quickly.

I'm happy with hostnine. But also, check out this thread too:
http://www.greenguysboard.com/board/...ad.php?t=40618 Watch out for overselling. One thing I think is a plus from going with a host that doesn't actively promote that they host xxx is that you're on a shared server with other websites that don't kill the server resources. If you're on a shared server with 200 websites that are all killing the server resources with big files, mpegs, and the like, that's going to impact your site's performance as opposed to being on a shared host with a bunch of websites for lawyers that are never updated and probably just 5 static pages to tell who they are and what area of law they practice and how to contact them. The more you learn about hosting, if you're truly new, you'll want to upgrade to a reseller account so you can have greater control over your websites. A reseller account will let each domain have it's own username/password where when you get the package of 10,000 megs for 7 a month with unlimited domains, it's more difficult to keep track of your mysql databases and it's even harder to create ftp users for someone to access only ONE directory if they're going to do some web development for you as opposed to subjecting all of your web projects to a security breach by giving a freelance access to the root directory.... |

Oh yeah, and one more thing...reseller account can be as low as $20 a month for a lot of luxeries that you don't have with the $7 or $10 a month account and when you're making $35 pps or 50% to 70% rev share, it doesn't take much to cover your expenses. It's very much so worth it.

Congratulations on your new venture. We can't say enough good things about Phatservers or Chilihost. For a listing of reliable hosts, please see the section "Hosts who do support the catch-all:" here:
http://bettercgi.com/strongbox/compatibility.html You'll definitely want to incorporate some sort of password protection/anti-slurping system on your website. Please consider us for your needs. We are also now offering a new product to protect against bandwidth abuse, which can save you tons of money in the long run. Password Protection: http://bettercgi.com/strongbox/ Bandwidth Protection: http://bettercgi.com/throttlebox/ We hope to hear from you! |
