Adrenalin rush start of the week. 20120123
Hiked a few trails in Everglades National park yesterday before getting out the kayaks and starting to paddle the Nine Mile Pond trail.
Didn't time it right and we found ourselves a bit lost in complete darkness on a moonless night in thick swarms of bugs with crocodiles all around us trying to find our way back to the car. The only lights we had were our stern kayak lights which are more for being seen than to a see and one LED headlamp that Christy was wearing. Was using my iPhone to navigate but only had a spotty cell signal so its maps wouldn't load or would take a very long time to load as the currant would push us into places full of crocodiles. Paddled right over into and over and bunch of resting crocodiles that almost flipped my kayak before finally making it back to the car. Actually it was way too dark to tell if they were crocodiles or alligators but Nine Mile Pond is known for its large population of crocodiles. Driving the long road back out of Everglades National park there were alligators running across the road as we ran over countless frogs. Learned that we need to get a waterproof GPS that doesn't require a cell signal and a much brighter light for navigating pitch black water. Just a day of work planned along with washing the kayaks. |
