Anybody using Vista yet?
Mac zealots stay outta my thread
Have any of you installed Vista yet? I have been eyeing a new pc with a 1 tb hard drive. They claim that they're not allowed to sell XP machines after tomorrow. If Vista is potentially icky, I may have to rush over and get the XP version by tomorrow. I hate being a guinea pig, and m$ bug tester, so that's the way I'm leaning anyway. If Sparky tells me that Vista will change my life (in a good way) I may change my mind. |

I don't use Vista (or XP)
However, what we have heard from trouble tickets: Email breaks in fun and interesting ways -- the new security requires juggling back and forth between the admin and user account to get things working properly. Annoying, but, easy to workaround after reading a few knowledge base articles. This was due to filtering port 25 at their ISP, and adding an alternate port to the firewall to allow a connection. Some broadband providers still allow port 25. Photoshop and dreamweaver both have patches available that you can download to make them work. Itunes breaks, as well as adobe's pdf viewer. I've heard flash breaks, but, again, an upgrade fixes it. I don't believe there is a fix for itunes yet (but, they have published a workaround) there are patches, fixes and workarounds for all of the issues if you have the time to look around. These are all issues encountered during an upgrade. Make sure you have plenty of ram -- 2gb is what we've seen as a workable minimum. If it were me, I would wait 30-45 days if this is a machine that you are going to depend on as an income producing machine (i.e. graphics, renderings, photo touchups etc). Let the paying Alpha testers shake out the bugs first. Also, make sure you get a machine that is Vista Premium Ready rather than Vista Capable. My understanding is that Capable doesn't allow you to use the Aero interface because the Video Card or other hardware isn't able to work with the heavy requirements for the interface. (I won't mention what my current thinking is for my next machine )

However, there are problems with Linux. It doesn't suspend or hibernate (I haven't spent enough time figuring out how to get it to work). I have to be really careful what external hardware I get, what drivers may not work, etc. Wireless cards & modems are always fun to shop for. So, that brings me to the current situation. I know I don't have the time to tweak, poke and prod the laptop I have into working 100%. I could run debian under vmware/parallels on a vista or XP powered laptop, but, I spend 99% of my time in ssh or a shell session. While virtualization is nice, I would prefer to be natively in a unix/linux environment and virtualize the windows component if I need. However, I can buy a macbook with a core2duo, which supports the VT bit, and run Windows (and presumably debian) under parallels. All the hardware works out of the box, I have a similar development environment (apple os/x runs bsd unix) and then I can test on the debian virtual. Quickbooks is available for mac, so, I could run that natively. The other alternative that I am considering is running debian on the macbook, and running Xen (www.xensource.com) as the hypervisor, and then run Vista & OS/X and Debian as 'guests'. I could run qemu, but, I think Xen is a bit more mature. I do realize that I could buy a vista laptop where everything works right out of the box and probably save some cash. But, I lose that native development platform. I've used linux as my desktop OS since Oct 2001. Short of quickbooks, and my old scanner, I haven't used windows on my desktop since. I've rambled and bored people long enough... and totally derailed the topic. Sorry emma

I read a lot of Apple software (Windows versions) is broken on Vista. So if you use iTunes or other apple products you might have to wait to have working software. I'm staying clear of it because I have too much invested in XP. And the only reason I use XP at all is because I worked its tech support years ago and MS gave me two copies. Before that it was RedHat
And if you're a gamer the NVidia video card drivers are giving a lot of people drops in framerates. One of my friends has to keep a copy of XP on his system to play Counter-strike (which he does religiously.) |

I like work, it fascinates me, I can sit and look at it for hours...

I use Windows Vista on my notebook, but many softwares I use frequently have incompatibility issues with the new OS.

If it werent for the three major drawbacks (handling of DRMs, Hardware changeout impossibility and the fubar graphical problems with DirectX 10) and their consequences (not being able to play Bluray and HD Dvd properly, a laptop that will need to be charged more frequently, and for most users - a total confusion issue when trying to change out hardware) it might be worthwhile - if youre comfortable with user account handling on Windows and properly setting permissions etc.
You would think that the company could have set up an operating system that was intuitive enough for the general user without needing a background in NT security |
