Question Filling the links list at first.

What is the best way to fill your list with links at first? Is it proper etiquette to just add a site whenever you want?

For example... If I just took it upon myself to list GGs Link-o-rama (or any site), would he (the webmaster) be flattered or would he be offended?

Or should I just sit back in hopes the submissions come pouring in?

My site gets ok lite traffic, I convert under 1:500 for my better sponsors, but I just added my links section.

It will take awhile to gain a decent amount of traffic to the list itself. Especially since I am offering a no recip submission at first, then recip required once I get my list filled a bit more.

Advice would be kind. Thank you!

Suggestion - look at some successful Link Lists and you'll see that you need more than just one catchall category called "Free Sites" to get submitters interested. SEO'd pages for each category would help.

Aside from that you need lots of good traffic hitting your LL pages to keep the regular submitters once you get them. If you think requiring recips will build any real traffic to your LL then you'll never have enough traffic to keep submitters coming back. You need to actively generate plenty of traffic to your LL pages or it'll just be a list of your own free sites.

You can also fill empty categories by asking for and importing lists of clean free sites that most submitters have. Once they see traffic coming to those sites from your LL pages they'll be more inclined to actually submit some sites themselves.

Some sponsors offer hosted free sites that you can use. Webmasters who build free sites often offer no recip versions of their freesites for others to use. (See my sig. for 5 of them) Some have hundreds of freesites for the picking. Do a board search on "clean free sites" and that will be a start for you.

Also, once you've got some content on your linklist, consider using one of your outbound links to advertise the site. That will feed a bit of traffic and make it more desirable for others to include you in their recip table.

yea, i agree...just ask and you'll find people (i'm one of them) who don't mind dropping you a list of free sites and clean entrances to list...i commonly do it for people starting new link type sites...and i do it expecting little traffic to begin with...but over time it builds...and you have a relationship with that webmaster...
and also sponsors sites and such too can be used to fill in...

but link type sites are hard every day work...getting traffic takes alot of time and work..i highly suggest you really try not to make money off the place for a long time yourself...and resign to it being a long term project that you are building and keeping clean for future benifits...doing it that way can help you grow faster...the spammer it is the slower you grow...

i hate going to link lists i've used over the years and seeing some of them(not GGs) have like 300k banners at the top of thier pages and having several banners there with the ultra heavy ones...after all more than half the surfers are still on dial up..they never get a chance to even see shit that huge(so don't fall into that trap)...--rant over

I just looked at my Google Analytics for my Link Lists, cause I was curious about that statement. These are the percentage of my visitors in the last month on dialup.

Hot Porn For Women 1.6%
The Red Cherry 3.13%
XXX Porn Tastic 3.04%
Got Porn Sites 1.86%

Maybe my sites are unusual, but I think the percentage of people on dialup is a lot lower any more. Given that, I still don't really have huge banners that are 300k either on my index page, but I do build free sites that are more graphic heavy than I did when I started 10 years ago, when you kept your loads on your pages under 100k.

Everyone is right Stinky, it takes time. And don't try and cheat, Voltar is right about spammers. I've done stuff years ago that got me on the outs with Google for awhile, I've finally got Page rank back on the the sites that were effected. If you try and do the quick and easy build up, it will turn around and bite you.

Wow what a healthy response from you folks. I really enjoy the advice. I have a large site with many sections. I keep my advertising minimal I think, very clean. No heavy banners and such.

I plan on asking for recips in the future to help build inbound links, not for building traffic. I hope that the incoming links will help me in the SERPs. Less traffic, but better quality.

I guess I am mainly asking if it is ok to just add sites to the list as I see fit. If I like a site or feel it will help my surfers should I list it on my own or wait for someone to submit it.

BTW... the site is at http://stinkypinkpimpin.com/ and the links section is here http://stinkypinkpimpin.com/links/ I think that you will find my advertising minimal. No banner farms. The TGP section is simple as it gets, some thumbs and a few ads. I don't even use traffic scripts or skim any of my hits. I keep it clean and surfer friendly.

honestly, most people don't mind the free linking to them, with traffic...so i've not seen it be a problem unless someone bypassed the entrance and went for the guts of a site..

i know there was an article out by earthlink a while back redcherry, that said that they never expect even half of thier people to get on high speed connections becasue of the price difference, until that comes down...i never fully trust anything google..but my server stats tell me i still have(as of yesterday) over 68% on dial ups urls coming into my sites...while i've only done about 250,000 surfers so far this month, it's still big enough for me to see the slow speed connection is still alive and widely used...after all...a whole lot of the USA still can't get high speed...everything that's rural and many smaller towns...as well as selected areas.....me i still use a Sat. connection...no other high speed in my area....
what i do see is more work place porn surfing, webmaster usage, and university surfing being the bulk of the high speed accessors...once you take those people out, you get like 10% maybe from home users that are high speed...5-10 years down the road i think it'll change to mostly high speed...
of course i also get a few sad surfers still on win3.1 and macs! but far more(over 90%) are on windoze...

anyway i build for whats out there being used on my domains now...which is still slower machines and connections...and i don't do movies or tubes...so that too may have something to do with all the dial up surfers..

Start a thread asking for clean freesites to populate your new LL(s).

You'll get replies with a link to recipless freesites, so you don't 'leak' traffic elsewhere, but have a healthy amount of sites for your surfers eg:

Sure could be. I don't have breakdowns on my server stats for who is on what connection, so I have to go by my Google Analytics for the data.
