Does .com really matter anymore?

Does it really matter if you register your domain with .com anymore? Do you think it makes a difference if you use .info, .us, etc...

Dot coms are more valuable when buying or selling the domain, and they probably get more type ins. What are some other reasons they are preferred?

Some factors with varying degrees of benefits include:

better SERPs for organic traffic
more repeat visits
more professional appearance (which could affect the number of inbound links)
better liquidity and resale value

Also, you don't wind up looking like you're trying to infringe on someone who's developed the site currently on the .com version of the name. You know, the one that wasn't available when you wanted to see if you could register it? Even if you developed WinRight.info or .us first, the site that eventually opened at WinRight.com would always be perceived as the first and the more serious since it has a .com address.

Plus I really don't want to trade links with a .biz, .org, country code, etc. as they tend not to be 'serious' and I find the owners tend to let them expire. .com is where it's at. Even .net is a distant cousin.

There are some country codes I will accept, but... .com is always the best way to go.
