Marketing VP Phil Schiller kicked off Apple's Worldwide Developers' Conference (WWDC 2009) today, where the company is distributing developer previews of the upcoming Snow Leopard version of Mac OS X and bringing developers up to date on its latest iPhone OS 3 plans for the iPhone/iPod Touch platform.
Touting the success of Mac OS X, which is apparently on about 75 million computers now, Schiller introduced a new version of the 15-inch MacBook Pro that uses the same battery technology as its 17-inch sibling - so that batteries are not interchangeable by the customer but offer longer life.
The new, 15-inch MacBook Pro (starting at $1699 with 9400M graphics) also eliminates the former ExpressCard, replacing it by an SD memory card slot. (The 17-inch MacBook Pro, at $2499, retains ExpressCard.)
As expected, Apple also moved the 13-inch aluminum MacBook over to its aluminum MacBook Pro family, adding FireWire 800, the "integrated" (non-replaceable) battery, a backlit keyboard and an SD memory slot, starting at $1199. The company continues to sell the white (FireWire) MacBook model. The super-slim MacBook Air gets a $300 price cut, to $1499, at the low end.

Debuting today, iPhone 3GS ("S" for "speed") updates Apple's cel phone flagship with a 3-Mpixel, autofocus camera that also captures 30fps VGA-quality video, as well as voice control, hardware data encryption (and remote wipe), longer battery life and a compass. Apple is pricing it at $199 for the 16GB version, $299 with 32GB, available in both white and black on June 19 with iPhone OS 3.0. The current 8GB iPhone 3G remains available at $99.

All MacBook Pro systems feature Apple's revolutionary aluminum unibody design and for the first time can be upgraded with up to 8GB of RAM, and up to a 500GB hard drive or up to a 256GB solid state drive. The 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro models can also be upgraded to a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor.
