You Will Not Be Forgotten

This week one of the largest Vietnam Veterans reunions in the nation is here in Melbourne, FL. Toni and I went over for a few hours today and learned a lot of interesting things.

http://www.tornrose.com/Odds_n_Ends/vets_042806/

http://www.floridatoday.com/apps/pbc...plate=printart

Images 074.jpg and 076.jpg are the “jets” of the boat; they did not use propellers and were one of the first “Jet Skis”.

Image 075.jpg is the boats numbers:

31 = Length in feet
RP = River Patrol
73= Year it was made
35 = Number made that year

And no this boat was not in Vietnam but it is the same model of ones that were being used there

Images 085.jpg to 116.jpg are of the War Dog Memorial, the tent was full of all the dogs that died in Vietnam.

The primary dog for the US military was Siberian Huskies until 1942 when it was “switched” to German Shepard’s. (Odd timing) The Vet did not know what this was, but said there were Huskies and Labs in Vietnam and today. This dog is Shadow, daughter of Buck who died 5 weeks ago and has his own book.

Image 117.jpg to 120.jpg is the Porto Rican tribute.

Image 121.jpg is two assholes who were driving in a crowded area MUCH faster then they needed to.

The images of the Wall speak for themselves.

good pics.

The war dog tribute was cool to and that dog looked very content having Kat scratch it. *those nails were 'workin'*

The 1st time i saw the wall in washington i was stunned to see it and realize each one of those names represented a son, daughter, husband, lover, wife or friend.

Thanks for sharing

I remember going to the war memorial in Washington DC a few years ago. Before I saw it, I thought it would just be a wall with names. But someone with us that had been before said that we would never feel the same after standing at the wall. I don't know if it was the number names listed or the silence or even the things left in remembrance but the guy was right. Vickie and I never said a word to each other in front of the wall and when we walked away, all we could say was "wow".

Nice pics. Who's the chick with the big hooters?

I wish more people would see the wall in Washington. I grew up with it and have seen the expression on many faces as they've seen it for the first time. When I was living in Alexandria and Dubya announced that he was going to war with Iraq come hell or high water I used the wall as a gauge.

People that spoke about reading names, touching the wall and thinking about the families always opposed the war. People that said they haven't seen the wall or basically just walked past it without thought were usually for the war.

I thought the same until I visited it, but visiting it...it's just a powerful experience.

Yeah this was an experience; the only other personal experience I can relate to this is the OKC memorial that we went to in 2002 or so. (We have not been to DC yet)

We spoke to the River Boat Vet for a bit and had a good conversation with him which almost took a turn for the worse when another vet who was there saw my t-shirt which was a skull and crossbones with the words “without fear there can be no courage – Key West Florida” which we got the last time we was down there.

For some reason he got very offended by this, you could feel his anger and he was ready to say something when another vet came from behind and “distracted him”. No idea what his issue was, the only thing I can think of is Key West is “known” as a liberal town and a mecca for gays.

Oh well… fuck him I will wear what I want to wear.

The memorial part of the reunion was pretty nice, had a lot of things to see and for the most part, vets who were very friendly and willing to talk. Once we crossed the road it was nothing more then a fair with crap tents selling crap all over and it had a totally different feel to mood, we walked around for 5 minutes and had our fill of the “fair” and went back over to the memorial part.

We also saw a lot of “Anti Kerry” shit…. Um…. It’s been 2 years, you won… move on…..
