This way they can give federal money to chosen churches so they can fund political activism for the 2006 election.

I'm not in the US, but it scares me to think that my children are growing up with more religious influence than I ever expected.
The idea that people in power have worrying and dangerous beliefs and are making decisions influenced by these beliefs is the stuff of nightmares. As long as they are hearing the right voices in their heads everything's fucking fine and dandy? Horseshit! This stuff drives me insane, and makes me just a little bit angry. Still, the humour helps! |

they wont have to dress anyone as bin laden - he'll appear again with a "terrorist strike" before the end of September this year - has to - the Repubs cant afford to lose congress and the Prezs numbers are running way to low to support reelections of his governors and congress - they need something for the "country" to look up to them for taking command over and making the pathetic voters feel "good"
That thing about the port deal is a sham - as soon as that panel in the house did that the Senate blocked any votes on it - so it wont be going anywhere until they can get their ducks in a row to try to come out smelling like a rose (its election year - these guys know exactly what they are doing and they just want to make sure the Rep. side gets the glory for this one) |

geez... as a Canadian and having nothing to do with the US politics, I still cringe at all the crap that is going on. We have our share of dipsticks up here too...
Does having money, power and being in politics instantly make you a fucktard?

I like the attention the port security (lack of) is getting right now, but I'd also like to see every power company on the grid up its security and esp nuclear power plants which are sadly under protected. By telling an honest Arab company/country that choose to 'side with us' after 9/11 that the deal that was approved by the exsperts in our own government is now not going to go through and for no other REAL reason then a paranoid distrust of Muslims will definitely have the effect of turning moderate Muslim countries against us. We lose what friends we have in the middle east that we NEED to actually honest to god find and fight terrorism its ugly, but its a fact, we cannot do this or we are going to come out much much worse off then if we just let this deal go through not to mention the divesting from all the other friendly countries that will HAVE to occur as soon as this passes IF it passes. |

Actually Ive never had any ill feelings about this company running things other than I wish the Mafia still owned the piers - then there wouldnt be a security problem at all - but its kinda hard to justify the outcry on this one when we already have China and Saudi Arabia running other ports in the US - just something that someone hung a pin on for the "news media"(yeah - they certainly aint reporters) to have a field day with to divert attention hopefully from another little more serious problem in Iraq - just another fun time provided by Rove and Associates.
As far as the security at Nuke plants - having worked at them for many years I kinda agree - the security forces suck and any real determined force could walk in there with no problem - but also knowing the workings and physics real well about a nuclear plant - I have no fears even if they did as there is nothing there that would cause any real harm to anyone - even if they managed to drain the entire fuel pool they would only kill themselves and a few workers at the plant - those things are so well shielded and so many (no personnel required) safeguards that you could walk into any of the office buildings on site with a full meltdown in progress and never be affected. Unfortunately a few press and activist groups tended to paint a little different picture and got a little overboard during three mile island where the worst that happened is a person inside the plant got the amount of radiation equal to having one extra lung xray that year Kinda helps to not believe everything you hear the press (why does that keep recurring as a theme?) put out in their scare tactics. |

That's all that happend at 3 mile?
Wow... To listen to the news media, there are mutant fish all over there.

Yeah - fortunately the US always required certain safeguards - even if the operators of the plant didnt always recognize a problem and act on it properly. Since then the plants have used that mechanical failure lesson (and the personnel issues that were attached in the accident) as their basis for training people to a much higher standard and not allowing things like playboy magazines in the control room anymore
As far as the radiation from the US plants - I guess the best way I can put it in laymans terms - Id never move next to a coal-fired plant but I sure wouldnt have any problem next to a nuke plant (BTW - coal fired plants put out more radiation from natural uranium in the coal on a daily basis than a nuke plant would ever put out) In the press's defense - they have no clue what different numbers mean when they are given them so they sensationalized the raise in radiation level to sound like something amazing - the actual radiation at the fence surrounding the plant at the highest point (where the public could get to and stand if they really wanted to - was equivalent to what you would get flying in an airplane one-way to Vegas for Internext from the fact you are receiving cosmic radiation (which is the same types of radiation) Of course if you are a hunter (bambi that is) you always get a little more than the rest of the population because of the small amounts of Cesium in deer from the bomb tests back in the 1950s - the fallout is naturally left in the plants over time. Now overseas plants (especially in the former USSR) the plants were not shielded to the degree the US plants are as they were more concerned with producing electricity at the cheapest cost possible which is why the plant that had the accident there did actually release quite a bit of bad stuff. |
