New Google Trends shows only Google traffic?

Hi All,

This appears quite interesting, go to Google's newest toy, their Trends:

http://www.google.com/trends

type in your favorite url and see what comes up.

It appears to me that this shows how much traffic a site is getting strictly from google.

Hence, if you compare this with alexa, (remember a site can be shooting up at alexa based on a traffic swapping scheme, or some type of round robin scheme among a bunch of their own sites, or a network of sites) the results can be quite eye opening.

Obviously, if this is correct, it will help folks with their SEO efforts tremendously.

Of course, if you are trying to determine where to submit your sites, or where to trade traffic with, and are looking to get quality traffic, this will help you as well.

I'm curious to know what everyone else sees with this. Am I reading it correctly?

link-o-rama.com stops at 2006 :( And www.link-o-rama.com yields no results (but I have seen terms do this one day & have a complete history the next, so I assume it's a glitch)

link-o-rama.com stopping in Oct 2006, that might be the time I added the code to my htaccess file that everything was to be on www.link-o-rama.com (and I'd be able to tell if this was so based on what I saw on the page that yielded no data from above)

Also, if you click on "Websites" for link-o-rama.com, that data is, sadly enough, true |cry|

I've had Google Trends on my homepage for a few months now - it's really interesting to see what people are searching for (as well as the frequent Sunday morning spamming of porn keywords from Texas)

I put "greenguy" in there when I 1st saw that you could see the history of a keyword/term & then got depressed when I realized my popularity had dropped about 80% since Jan 2004 |cry| (or maybe that means more people have bookmarked my site & no longer need to find me in Google....yeah, that it!)

I just re-read what I typed & I'm not sure what it means as far as this thread, but like I said, I've used the trends feature for non-porn stuff for a few months & assumed I had pertinent info :D

Here's a use for Google Trends that is a bit unexpected.:D|thumb

Will Google Trends Decide What's Obscene?
This time around the strategy gets a twist. Attorney (Larry) Walters will show what Pensacola been searching for using Google Trends. He's also subpoenaed Google, asking for more detailed results than those available online. Google hasn't responded yet.

I finally contribute some (what I think is) useful information in this forum & no one cares :(

Interesting Tickler.

I think most folks are keeping quiet on this one, Greenie, because they don't quite understand what information Google's Trends is actually giving. I'm not 100% sure that I get it either.

I was playing with it yesterday. It's kind of frustrating because you have no idea what the actual numbers are, you can only play with general trends and relativity. No, not that kind of relativity.

I put in "orgy" and "apple pie" for Australia (these are the sample search terms used by the Florida obscenity defence team). We definitely prefer "orgy."

I haven't been overly impressed with google trends, now with alexa.

Compete isn't too bad, but when you compete your sites with google analytics vs these places they can be wildly inaccurate.

CaptainJSparrow 2008-06-28 07:01 PM

Alexa's info isn't that accurate when I look at my sites stats, Google's Analytics, and Google's Webmaster Tools. Google's webmaster trends seems to be more accurate than Alexa as far as the graph, however it starts in 2006 for my site which is weird because it's gotten good Google traffic for many years. I have no idea why it starts in 2006.

Coincidence? :D

CaptainJSparrow 2008-06-29 04:12 PM

Yep, that's pretty weird...especially when you consider that 2006 is when both of our sites began trending down in google's serps.
