Stat Counters

Hallo,
Is it allowed to place a stat counter on free gallery sites when trying to apply to a link list. My first attempt was refused because I had a redirecting url which turned out to be my statcounter.

Also should free gallery sites be optimised and submitted to search engines?

Thanks in advance

The best counter is the server logs from your host. The server logs will tell you where your traffic is coming from also. The little counter on the page makes the page load slower. I think the reason LL's reject sites with counters is because it's an eyesore.

I will delete it.

I'm not sure how they do it, but I know I was using sitemeter, and upgraded version that isn't an eyesore and the site was rejected. I think the javascript is indicative of spy ware or something malicious...definately a no no....

Exactly. A while back several of the free counter services started trying to install toolbars, malware and other crap. Pretty typical of some of the brainiacs in the adult biz. Take something good and find a way to fuck it up for a little short term gain.

Now most link lists (and probably most TGPs) reject for any sort of javascript. It's kind of a shame, because Google analytics is pretty bad ass, doesn't appear anywhere on the browser, and gives you more info that you could possible ever use, but the javascript will usually get you rejected.

I think that traffic counters are a waste of load time on free sites and TGP galleries.

What stats do you need on a free site/gallery? Number of visitors? Who is sending traffic? You can get those stats from your web server logs anytime. But who cares anyway?

The only thing you should monitor is how many sales you had from which FS/gallery page. That's all. Looking at other data is useless.

Myself, once a month I harvest my server logs and check out if any of the traffic sources had dried up. I also check if any of bad traffic sources showed up and block their IPs.

Also because some of the counters have banner exchanges that can link to some pretty unsavory sites.

Funny to come across this thread - we just starting designing websites for mainstream customers and so many of them have asked us to put a counter on their website!

Our view is why make personal information public? I think this applies to free sites and galleries too, why do you want surfers to know how many people viewed the page?

Your host should provide more than adequate stats that you can view by signing in, we use awstats which is fantastic! Find out from your host which stats program they offer and enjoy watching your traffic from every angle.

I think this is one of the first lessons a newbie needs to learn - I put counters on my first adult porn site too.:D

There are several 3.rd party counter services that does not make this public.

However, i do understand why it is unwanted at both gallery and freesite submits....i bet the same rules will include blogs as well pretty soon.
