Obscene Stories?

Jusr read this in XBiz http://xbiz.com/news_piece.php?id=10680 It seems that even words are now being censored. So much for freedom.

I'll wait until the supreme upholds these nefarious charges that are a result of selective spurious enforcement before I start to worry.

I'll probably be dead by then anyway.

Very true SirMoby, but sheesh...some of those stories were really really bad. Talk about walking a tightrope in todays environment |dizzy|

Agreed, some of those stories were absolutely horrible. But from what I've read, there was also an area set aside for file sharing. Large zips. Since the theme of the site was what it was, you have to wonder what was being traded with the stories, and if there's more to the story than just obsenity.

Wait and see if they hit ASSTR or TextFiles next.

I don't know the owners of that site, but I'm also wondering if there were other reasons besides the sex stories for their site to be shut down. Otherwise it would seem to be too straight-forward an attack on freedom of speech/expression.

We've run some free sex story sites for years. It used to be that you could write about anything you wanted, the only problem was if a story included a photo or illustration. But times have been changing. We proactively took some "questionable" story sections offline back in the Ashcroft days, and they're still offline. While they're not stories that I personally enjoy (young sex stuff mostly), I look forward to the day when we can again publish most every submitted story without regard to whether we might get in trouble for doing so.

Words will go first, followed soon after by thoughts.

There is a lot that's still not clear and I'd like to get more information about the actual charges against the site. Ot course it's unlikely that the Supreme Court will uphold some of these obscenity charges but how many of us can afford to shut down and pay lawyers for trials that go on for years?

Also keep in mind that there's some backroom talks that have gone on with the newest appointee. I think some cases are already decided.

Since when can thoughts be criminalized?
Fortunately, this type of case will attract the attention of non-porn anti-censorship groups. Having the support of libraries, book sellers and authors will add much weight to our issues. Nobody wants to see book burning happen again.

The self-righteous hypo-moralists in this country with power are out of control.

From what I understand, it had more to do with some pedo file sharing stuff and not the stories on the site.

That could very well be but I don't have any information about. Only the news story and what I could read at thier site.

Do you have some information that you could point to?

but so what? They are just thoughts. Hollywood can have movies that protray nearly all of that and it is allowed. So why on earth isn't someone allowed to write it!?

Btw..i found it interesting that 'threesomes' was on that list next to child porn.

The day people's writing is censored is a day we should all be sad.

Not for much longer it seems... check this shit out:

"The provision added to the Children's Safety Act of 2005 would require any film, TV show or digital image that contains a sex scene to come under the same government filing requirements that adult films must meet. ... Under the provision inserted into the Children's Safety Act, the definition of sexual activity is expanded to include simulated sex acts like those that appear in many movies and TV shows."
