Offline Advertising

Does anyone do any offline advertising for any of their online porn ventures?

I recently put out a load of flyers and left them in local sex shops, it is too early to say if traffic has really increases to the sites I left flyers for but I figured it was worth a go.

I tried this once before by putting ads in some local alternative newspapers, and it was a dismal failure. The ROI just wasn't there.

I've been thinking about trying out some of the print/TV options with AdWords for some mainstream stuff.

Maybe I'll look closer for some porn stuff.

Porn mags are pretty much dead up here but I've got some plans with more softer mags. How do you guys do it with tracking?

The one thing I can think of off the top of my head would be to have the printed URL read like. www.mysite.com/magname/ and have it track then redirect to the homepage or something. Of course most would leave off the last bit but it may give you at least a conservative number.

This would be a great idea |thumb, you could also set up an alias address with a subdomain: http://mag.site.com -> http://site.com/mag/
Maybe this would prevent people from dropping the last part.

So I dabble quite a bit in offline marketing for online adult companies. What I tell all of my clients is that what you are really doing when you try these types of placements tends to be an exercise in branding and product placement rather than straight up cpc advertising.

It is harder to measure the effectiveness of these campaigns because so many people realize they can drop the / and whatever comes after it and still get to the same site. What I always recommend is if you can put a special offer with it and then use whatever promo code they put in to identify the source of the traffic afterwards as people are much more prone to doing this.

The types of promos that I have done were all done on the beach during US College spring break. We handed out condoms for sex search and adult rental movie cards, but the most effective thing was taking pictures of the co-eds partying and handing them a card that referred them to a site where they could get their pics and we of course then had banner spots etc for the sponsors at that location.

Site went from 0 hits to 35,000 uniques in 2 weeks which is nothing if you are buying traffic... but when it is all word of mouth it is pretty solid.

Back when phone sex was the "in" thing and webcams were just getting started, I used to run an ad in the alternative papers in Atlanta/NY/LA in the phone sex section.. Camdollies: Cum SEE what you've been hearing.

and our traffic shot thru the roof. It was great ..then more people got into webcams.

However in the back of a few of the sex shops and strip clubs here, they have posting boards DejaVu comes to mind and I stop there once every few months to hang a new post with tabs so they can pull them off .. Who knows how much come from there. but it doesn't take me very much effort to post them.

I used to purchase ads in the back of Rolling Stones magazine to push my cam sites. The price was around 800.00. At the time around 1999, the traffic was good and it converted. Then it just fell off about a year after that.

I tried advertising in a British national newspaper for a while, good but not brilliant traffic.

I also used to leaflet at the London Erotica show (porn festival) each year. Again good but not brilliant.
