Why I Fucking Hate Alexa 🤬

This is currently what you see when you look at link-o-rama.com on Alexa:

This is what I show for link-o-rama.com in Google Analytics for the same time period:

Pretty steady, right?
(the dip is Xmas & the spike was 1 hour on 1 day where I think I got hit by a bot)

2 months ago, I had a guy buying an ad from me come up for renewal, so I quoted him the same price as the year before because my traffic was basically the same. He looked at Alexa, saw that dip (and it was April, so I was still down there) & told me I'd have to cut my price in half if I wanted him to keep the ad. I showed him basically the same Google Analytics graph proving my traffic is basically the same, but I could not convince him that I have no control over 100,000 sites that now have more traffic than I do.

This is why I fucking hate Alexa |angry|

Similar web is a much better metric. Alexa is shit. Alexa is good for finding scammers who are leeching your traffic. Thats about it.

This should make you feel better.

Alexa has NEVER been a reliable source for traffic volume. It has marginal value for tracking incoming links, that's about it. Using Alexa as a basis for ad buys is foolish.

I might be wrong here, but isn't Alexas data collected from that thingy a java-installation puts in your browser (if you allows it?)
And isn't Java some sort of slowly dying?

If so, wouldn't this mean Alexa-data will loose its value in time?

Again, this post was made out of something I believe I've heard a long time ago.
So I might be completely of here. If so, sorry :)

That is what I thought. Alexa only used data from users who had the alexa toolbar installed.

This is what they say on the site:

Quote:

Alexa's traffic estimates are based on data from our global traffic panel, which is a sample of millions of Internet users using one of many different browser extensions. In addition, we gather much of our traffic data from direct sources in the form of sites that have chosen to install the Alexa script on their site and certify their metrics. However, site owners can always choose to keep their certified metrics private.

Hmmmm.. kind of like the old Nielson ratings for television? And this is supposed to be a valid measure of traffic? Really?
