I May Be Scarce...

As if anyone cares...

This problem where Windows updated & suddenly I have no speakers has lead me down a rabbit hole of Windows fuckups |facepalm| Apparently this Windows 10 Version 1803 update, which is a BIG ONE, shows that it's at 0% downloading anytime I go to Windows Update in Settings, but if I go to the Update History, it shows Windows 10 Version 1803 as the last update & that it requires a restart to finish installings. I've restarted it at least 5 times |banghead| So I ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter & restarted again & now it shows that it's at 65% of downloading Windows 10 Version 1803, so I'll restart when it hit 100% & |pray| my speakers come back, but if I remember correctly, this update takes a good 3-4 hours |angry| so if anyone needs me, find a workaround :D

I remember having an issue like that some time ago, did the same update for like 3 months. I googled it and had to do something, try Google, see what they say.

Greenguy 2019-03-04 09:56 PM

It downloaded, started to install & got stuck at 64% for well over an hour, so I rebooted, which put me back to square one, so I ran the troubleshooter again & it downloaded & installed itself & now it's waiting for a restart, so as soon as I finish some work I'm going to let it take 4 hours to update while I sleep & |pray|

Greenguy 2019-03-05 07:36 AM

I rebooted last night, the update failed |facepalm| and it looks like it redownloaded & installed again while I slept & it wants me to restart again, but I've got shit to do 1st.

Are there multiple updates getting installed? If so try installing them one at a time.

Greenguy 2019-03-05 11:02 AM

Nope, it's just the 1: Windows 10, version 1803. Right now, both the Update & History page show it's "Awaiting Restart" but I think it's a big update & I've got work to do, so I'll try it again tonight.

Did a Google search re the 1803 update. One thing popped up in multiple forums.

Disable any anti-virus that may be running before installing the update.

That would've been helpful if you posted it 5 hours sooner :D because at 6:30 I rebooted & it started to install the update. I checked back at 8:30 & it was at 29% (you gotta love Microsoft). Woke up this morning & the update took |thumb but still no speakers |angry| I ran the audio troubleshooter & it found a problem & told me to reboot, so I did & nothing. Ran the troubleshooter again & it can't find anything. Installed the Realtek drivers Dell said might fix it & nothing. So I checked for Windows updates & it found 4:

It's stable now & I have work to do, so I'll probably wait until tonight to reboot & since those all say 1803 I'll disable Norton before I reboot |thumb

Is progress you can't see still progress?

I have an idea, so I'm just going to toss this out there.
Have you tried rebooting?

I was thinking more like ... |cleo|

Greenguy 2019-03-07 09:06 AM

REBOOTED |angry| last night so it could install the 4 new updates & this morning, still no speakers. Ran the Audio Troubleshooter & it said it found a problem, so I REBOOTED |angry| and nothing. Installed the Realtek drivers from Dell & once again REBOOTED |angry| and still nothing. So I'm back to where I started, except I have unseen progress :D

Greenguy 2019-03-08 09:30 AM

Riddle me this, |greenbat

I didn't do anything to the PC yesterday after I posted. I wake up this morning & it's frozen in sleep mode. I'm clicking my mouse, hitting the keyboard...nothing. Just a dimly lit black screen (so it was on) and the light on the power button. I even changed the batteries in the mouse :D but nada. I press the power button once & nothing. I'm very |facepalm|

So I hold the power button down for 10 seconds & it shuts off. I press it again & it fires up. 1st thing I open is Chrome & suddenly I hear a loud notification ding. There's a Winter Weather Advisory |snowman2

I have no fucking clue why the speakers decided to start working, but I am thrilled that they are back, because working on a PC that has no sound really SUCKS! :D

JustRobert 2019-03-08 09:36 AM

My two Chrome books do this to me randomly. Never know when or why but the hold power button for 10 seconds, close and reopen always reboots it.

I wonder who has the record for most work hours wasted:

1. Motorway congestion
2. Facebook
3. Microsoft Fuckups

MeatPounder 2019-03-13 07:13 PM

Had that problem on one of my boxes...drove me crazy until I used the
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...date-assistant

Greenguy 2019-03-13 10:47 PM

I don't know if I have that or not, because it does download & install updates on it's own, I just have it set to let me know when it's going to restart so I can make sure everything saved & whatnot (I've lost unsaved data in the past).

If I don't have it, why the fuck is it an Add On & not in Windows by default? lol

Greenguy 2019-03-14 09:46 AM

Seeing as people are apparently following this for some reason...

Update went fine as far as I can tell. I just clicked the Check For Updates button & it says I'm up to date, but based on just installing 1803 & the link Mr Pounder posted mentioning 1809 from Oct 2018, I have the feeling I'm not.

MeatPounder 2019-03-14 10:11 AM

That's the big problem with the windows 10 forever hype
As in the old days windows has to update...now they call them builds for major upgrades.
Some machines it goes smooth, others just hang
The windows update tool is microsucks answer to those that hang

hincapie 2019-03-14 11:13 AM

In irrelevant news, whats up with megapornlinks meatpoundeR?

MeatPounder 2019-03-14 11:54 AM

I basically let it go as I had very little traffic and no submitters

Greenguy 2019-04-01 08:25 AM

This shit only happens to me |facepalm|

So it was all good until another Windows update turned them back off. So I installed the Realtek drivers Dell said I needed & it said it 1st had to uninstall, reboot, then reinstall. Right before it rebooted, I noticed the speakers were back on, so I thought great! It reboots, finishes the install & no speakers |facepalm| So I run it again, but this time I hit cancel as soon as it reboots & speakers work.

A couple days later I had to reboot & the fucking Realtek software installed when it started back up |facepalm| So I ran this Dell Update program & it starts to update at 3:45 PM yesterday. It was still updating at 7:30 PM, 11:00 PM, and 6:30 AM |facepalm| So I hit cancel & it sat their cancelling for 2 hours until I just force closed it |facepalm|

I guess I'll reboot & run it again...|huh

Greenguy 2019-04-01 11:11 AM

Whatever the Dell Update got stuck doing (again) was able to be installed by Dell's Support Assist program & now I have speakers again |thumb
