Herding Cats (A
Message to all Sponsors) Revisited
Jim posted this in a newsletter over
two years are ago and with all the strange things going on with
sponsors it's worth of a repost.
Someone once told me that trying to get webmasters to do anything they don't
want to do is equivalent to herding cats. No matter how hard you might try, it
just never works out well.
When advertising programs were just starting
out, there was one that decided, if a webmasters wanted to advertise for them,
they could not advertise for anyone else. Although this program paid more than
most, webmasters decided to go out and find different sponsors.
The
advertising program and advertiser relationship is that of a partnership. Too
many advertising programs treat this relationship as an employer/employee
association. Many programs feel that if a webmaster is not happy with a decision
they made, the webmaster can just move on. Without changing their way of
thinking, these programs are doomed to fail. It may not happen today, tomorrow
or even within the year but, that kind of thinking has brought some of the most
stable programs to their knees.
Conversely, programs that listen to
their affiliates and make changes accordingly, will most times succeed.
The message or moral of this little rant... If it is within your power
to do what the majority of your affiliates want done, do it. And if you have
done something that the majority of your affiliates don't want done, change it
back. Treat the webmasters as your partners. It will never hurt your program in
the long run.
