Avoid the Edit Button using FTP

A week or so ago, I had to make a small edit on a GGandJ page. It was just a quick link change. I just quickly fired up my FTP client, logged into the server and edited the file on the server. Job done in less than half the time. That's where the problem started. While the job was tiny the link added was hugely important to the rest of the site.

A few days later I had to edit the same page again. This time I did it using my html editor and uploaded the file. Later that day I received a few angry emails asking why I pulled the link.

I think you can see what happened. But just in case you can't here it is. By editing the file on the server and not my local machine, I had no local copy. So, when I uploaded the edited file from my local machine a few days later, it didn't include the added link.

This was a simple example and was fixed quickly. But, if nobody wondered why I removed the link, I probably would have never known about the mistake. That was the first and last time I will ever use the edit button on the server side while using FTP.
